Preparing For Individualism
Preparing for Individualism

Gathering information strategies:

When trying to get to know my students and their families, a few ways I would gather information about them would be a home visit along with interest inventories. I feel that a home visit would be a good thing considering that the child will be comfortable in his/her own home. This would allow for the teacher to not only get to know the student, but to also see how the student and parents interact. Teachers will get the opportunity to learn more about the child’s interests, experiences and the parent’s goals for their child. When getting to know the child, I would ask the parent to fill out an interest inventory in order to collect information about the student’s routines, habits, likes, dislikes, interests etc. Having this on paper will allow me to keep better track of each student and will also give me something to look back on if I start to notice a specific behavior in class. I think a home visit would show parents how much I care about their kids and would also help to remind me that every family wants the best for their child.

Gaining students trust:

Two approaches that I will use to build trust with each of my students are teaching with enthusiasm and passion and making learning fun. I feel that these two approaches go hand in hand. When a teacher is confident and knowledgeable on the subject at hand, I feel that students will feed off of the teacher. Incorporation of games, stories and hands on activities within the classroom can help to keep the students attention on a specific subject. When learning becomes fun, it becomes natural. This being said, if a teacher is excited about a certain subject, the student will be excited to learn about that subject as well. It is very difficult for students to get excited about a subject if the teacher is not!

Building trust with families:

Two approaches I will use to build trust with students families are social events and structured family

The Importance of Individualism Every society consists of a group of individuals. Lawyers, garbage workers, fickle teenagers, and even infants all interact and produce a diverse, successful society. Each member of that society contributes in his or her own distinct way. But when individualism is repressed, humanity within the society is lost. The importance of individualism is satirized through exaggerated psychological and physical training, the implementation of an austere caste system, and the censorship of literature and religion by a controlling government in Aldous Huxley's futuristic novel, Brave New World.…

Individualism index measures this dimension and Australia scores highly on this index. Non-western countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America score lowly on this dimension. People have deep ties to their families and communities and gives preference to group interest. The Australian score on this dimension is 90 percent (The Hofstede Center). This high score implies that Australians believe that every person has an individual responsibility to solve his or her own problems instead of relying on other people. The interests of a person are placed first before those of the society. Once a person reaches the age of 18, he or she is expected to look for a job and fend for themselves. In old age, a person will…

To promote involvement and positive relationships with families and communities I believe that an open door policy is essential to have. I would do this by talking with the parents every day at drop off and pick up time. During the morning drop off time I would be able to find out how the previous afternoon went, if I wasn't there to see it myself, and how the child slept the previous night. I could also find out whether or not the child ate breakfast. During afternoon pick up time I would be able to tell the parent how the child's day went. I would also keep daily sheets for each child that would include bathroom breaks, what and how much the child ate throughout the day, as well as any concerns or questions I might have about the child. Another way I would keep the open door policy is by sending home a weekly newsletter informing the parents of what would be going on that week in the classroom. I would encourage parents to call the center or stop by to see how things are going for the child. I know that when parents are working they, often times, wonder about the child's day. By calling or stopping by they are able to peek in on the child and get updates are how the day is going. I would also encourage parents to attend any special event that the child is apart of, such as Christmas programs. The parents would, also, be more than welcome to have lunch with the child on his or her birthday if they are available to do so. I believe that, as a teacher, it is important to be the support system for the child while he or she is at school and while the parents are away at work. If the parents are working on something, such as using manners or potty training, I would be more than willing to help them by reinforcing that task while the child is at school. It is very important for both the child and the parents to have consistency in their daily routine. I believe that by…

How I ensure that families are kept aware of what’s happening in their child’s daily/ or weekly life in my program is by having room displays such as photos and posters of the children interacting with each other and bulletin boards of their artwork all around my center. I would also post pictures of the children dancing and laughing around my class to show the parents the fun things we do. I would also post pictures of them working to show the children’s parents that my children are getting educated and that my children are learning. I am also able to provide the families with my weekly agenda of what the children and I will be working on. I can also exchange emails with the families to communicate via email, if they have any questions we can also exchange numbers. I can also provide daily reports of the child’s daily progress. I can also include and struggle the child has had during the day.…

Families have the right to know: the program goals; philosophy; expectations for children, families, and staff operating assumptions and practices that will accomplish the goals’ and how resources are allocated to achieve goals. There are several ways I will communicate with the families about these things and what might be going on with their child. Some vehicles of information I may use might include notes, journals, conferences, documentation panels, displayed planning forms and objectives, web pages, and meetings. I will also talk with…

I define individualism as being a social concept in which there is little to minimal government control, leaving the citizens to be virtually independent and self-reliant. Unlike with social capital where the social networks are valued, the chief focus is the individual. With individualism an individual doesn’t take the interest of society into consideration when attempting to advance one’s own interest. The principal idea of social capital is that social networks are valuable. Social capital refers to the collective value of the social networks within a society and the dispositions that result from these networks to do things for each other. Social capital can be seen in various outlets. For example information flows (e.g. learning about…
