Also known as toxemia is a pregnancy complication that can only be resolved by delivering the fetus. The mother’s BP is elevated, there is protein in her urine, and her organs are being damaged. Preeclampsia usually is diagnoses post 20 weeks gestation which is the age of a viable fetus. If a diagnosis is made earlier than 20 weeks the mother and her physician must decide whether the wait or deliver. Waiting until the fetus is viable is highly dangerous due to the fact that preeclampsia leads to eclampsia and serious and fatal complications.
