Precious Movie Psychology

The movie “Precious”, is based on a novel “Push” by an American author Sapphire. It takes place in Harlem, New York the time period was 1987. We meet Claricee Precious Jones, but goes by Precious who is the main role in the film portrayed by Gabourey Sidibe. The film shows us that she is a sixteen year old girl who is illiterate, obese, and does not have any friends. She a feminization of poverty. Who has been raped by her father which resulted a incest pregnancy with two kids one of them “Mongo” who has Down Syndrome. She has been kicked out school because she is pregnant. Although, she has been given the choice to go to a alternative school. Which means an educational setting that is structured to accommodate educational,behavioral, or medical needs of children. So in result of Precious’s pregnancy she is suggested to go there.
For that reason is that Precious’s father is not focusing on the mother, he focuses on Precious, so her mother lashes out on her. There were multiple scenes where Mary, would get a pan or harmful objects and hurt her daughter because she is too angry towards her daughter instead of her husband. She does not only physically hurt her. She also hurts her verbally, calling her names and treating her like she is worth less. That affects her psychologically. Her mother taunts her about being overweight and yet she keeps forcing her to eat more or when she doesn't want food she will make her eat it. Mary also depends on her to get welfare and lie to them about their situation. So she is taught that education is not important but, welfare money is. However in the film Precious finally admits her situation in a meeting with the welfare agency she explains what actually goes on in her home.
