What is Bt brinjal?
Bt brinjal is genetically modified variety of brinjal which gives more resistant to Brinjal plant against insects.
In technical terms Bt Brinjal is a transgenic brinjal created by inserting a gene [Cry 1Ac] from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (and hence the name Bt) into Brinjal. The insertion of the gene into the Brinjal cell in young cotyledons has been done through an Agro bacterium-mediated vector, along with other genes like promoters, markers etc.
This genetic insertion is said to give the Brinjal plant resistance against lepidopteron insects. It is reported that upon ingestion of the Bt toxin by the insect, there would be disruption of digestive processes, ultimately resulting in the death of the insect. HOW ARE THEY PREPARED
Genetic modification involves the insertion or deletion of genes. In the process of Cisgenesis genes are artificially transferred between organisms that could be conventionally bred. In the process of Transgenesis genes from a different species are inserted, which is a form of horizontal gene transfer. In nature this can occur when exogenous DNA penetrates the cell membrane for any reason. To do this artificially may require attaching the genes to a virus or just physically inserting the extra DNA into the nucleus of the intended host with a very small syringe, or with very small particles fired from a gene gun.

Controversy behind bt brinjal
First let us undestand the controversy and why people are opposing it? Several studies on Bt crops in particular and GM crops in general show that there are many

Bouvier, Dogbo, and Camara studied whether it is possible to produce bixin using the microorganism E.coli. Bixin is a pigment that is only synthesized naturally by the plant Bixa Orellana (from tropical America), and it is the second pigment used in the world, for example in cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industries. The authors presumed that engineering genes in sink organs of plants presenting high amounts of lycopene could be an alternative to the natural occurring Bixin, which would be advantageous in the market.…

Examples of transgenic species are commercial crops, such as corn, potatoes and cotton that contain the gene for the toxin from the bacterium B. thuringiensis. This toxin protects the crops against damaging pests however does not harm their natural predators. Recent work has involved the production of transgenic cows and goats. The cloned transgenic goats Mira, Mira and Mira produce milk that contains an anti-clotting protein that can be isolated and used in patients undergoing heart surgery. Transgenic hamsters have been used to produce the hormone that stimulates ovulation, Recombinant Follicle Stimulating Hormone, and pharmaceutical drugs such as 'Puregon' use such products, which is used in the treatment of infertility in women.…

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through the means of Genetic Engineering. It is when a gene from one organism is taken and inserted into another in order to improve and produce a desired trait for that certain organism. Sometimes it is known as "transgenic" for transfer of genes.…

Insect resistant or Bt crops produce a groups of protoxins known as the cry protoxins or Bt toxins. The Bt toxins have insecticidal effects on pests attempting to eat the crops. The toxins have been proven to be nontoxic in humans and other nontarget species both when applied as a spray and as a GMO. First, the Bt toxins were proven to be safe by the EPA in the 1970’s as a spray and later in the 1990’s the GMO crop version was proven to be safe by the…

Plants are genetically engineered to be resistant to herbicides, produce their own pesticides, have viral resistance, and to convert nitrogen directly from the soil. But these transgenes can insert into the genetics of relatives through cross-pollination, creating superweeds resistant to herbicides, pests and viruses. This may increase pest’s immunities and antibiotic resistances, transfer of pathogenic genes, the creation of new viruses, and introduce allergens into the food supply. Worse, these problems will be faster growing, disease resistant, and heat, cold, and drought tolerant. These and mutations may cause irreversible disaster. Planting engineered herbicide resistant…

Genes are inserted from E.g. Corn, this term is known as cross breeding where different plants are modified to grow bigger plants and to produce more food. When a gene transfer occurs, the gene is then called a GMO (Genetically modified organism), Genetic engineering is not only used on animals but its also used on many other organisms so it can improve them, such as crops or medicinal plants, bacteria and even viruses.…

Until 2008, beet farmers in the United States grew B. vulgaris naturally through conventional methods; however, agriculturalists changed their procedures once commercial planting of herbicide-tolerant sugarbeets was approved. Currently, there are three types of resistant sugarbeets. The first type, InVigor sugarbeets, are immune to glyphosate, which is an active defense ingredient in most herbicides. Roundup Ready sugarbeets, another type, are likewise invulnerable to glyphosate (Beta vulgaris GM Events, n.d.). According to M. Jassem, scientists formulated these two genetically modified organisms by transferring a dominant gene of bacterial origin into the sugarbeets, which permits the synthesis of EPSP—an enzyme necessary for growth that would…

Genetic modified foods can be very beneficial to farmers who have loss crops from pests and insects that eat them. Originally farmers used chemical pesticide annually to kill pests however; they found that consumers would not eat the food as it was a health hazard. Also it had harmed the environment as the pesticide would poison the water supply. By having genetically modifying crops food can be protected from insects and pests. Bacillus thuringiensis(BT) Corn is an example of a genetically modified crop, which contains delta endotoxins and when insects are exposed to this the toxins will paralyse the insect’s digestive system and kill it. Hence GM foods can be very beneficial as the production of agriculture will be less damaged.…

In the six years that it has undergone trial and safety evaluation, it was found that Bt corn is safe foe human consumption because Bt corn is very specific. The Bt protein will only affect an organism (ACB) with specific receptor sites in its alkaline gut where the proteins can bind. Human beings and many insects lack these receptors. Besides, the stomach of humans is acidic. It also does not cause allergy because it is easily digested or degraded in heat. It does not move or leach with groundwater because it binds to soil particles. The proteins do not particularly last in acidic soil conditions. Under sunlight, Bt protein is destroyed very rapidly. With…
