Porous Hero

The term role model generally means any "person who serves as an example, whose behaviour is emulated by others". The individual that I chose from a young age to emulate my behavior off of is Spongebob Squarepants. He is a sponge that lives at the bottom of the ocean in a town called Bikini Bottom, where he works at a local burger restaurant called the Krusty Krab. He’s not my hero in the idea that he lives alone and works in fast food for his entire life but because he is the most loyal and determined individual that I can think of. He taught me that no matter how old you are, to never let go of your inner child.

In the Spongebob Squarepants Movie, he is sent on a quest to retrieve King Neptune’s crown, but in order to get there he must reach Shell City. The journey puts him to the test where he is able to find the balance between becoming a man and keeping a child at heart along with showing loyalty to his friends like Patrick Star and his boss Mr.Krabs and show courage and bravery through the many challenges he faces during his travel to Shell City.

He becomes a hero by returning the crown and saving the city from the evil scientist Plankton. He does so in a very unorthodox way because he and his best friend for life Patrick must figure out a way to become men and save the town while still retaining their inner child. Several times throughout the movie the friends question their manliness.spongebob says “What about US? We’ll never survive that trench! You said it yourself, this is man’s country. Let’s face it Patrick, we’re just… kids.”

Patrick says, “We're NOT kids!”

Spongebob tells him, “ OPEN YOUR EYES, PATRICK! We blow bubbles, we eat ice cream - we worship a dancing PEANUT, for corn's sake! We don't belong out here!”(Spongebob Squarepants Movie)

In this way, Spongebob is actually a tragic hero because even though he does save Bikini Bottom, he makes many mistakes and has many

Krabs has been the center of a dirty joke all along. Mr. Krabs, which one can tell by the name, is a sea crab. Looking back at “Bikini Bottom”, does it all begin to make sense? Mr. Krabs lives in “Bikini Bottom”. The same way that someone of age can come to this conclusion, could a small child not be capable of the same thing? Even if someone else can prove that SpongeBob does indeed have educational value, is anyone willing to take the risk of their small children asking them about bottoms, bikini’s and crabs? The word “crabs” is used to describe pubic lice. If the show was truly meant for children, why would the creator leave all of these things so noticeable? When looking at this show and the hidden jokes and comparing them to shows such as Family Guy, and South Park there is not much difference in the vulgarity of the jokes. The only difference is that one is hidden and one is…

And with those words, an American icon was born, but no one could have known it then. He was just a square, yellow sponge living at the bottom of the sea in a town called Bikini Bottom. Had anyone predicted that this little guy would become the frontrunner of television (not just cartoons, television) viewing for the next decade, they would have been laughed out of the room. Now, the cartoon is the virtual life-blood with which Nickelodeon strives to this day. But the show has not only taken Nickelodeon to new heights, it has also left a permanent impression on American culture; an impression in the shape of that goofy smile permanently affixed on SpongeBob’s face. And the show itself has had some real gems as far as episodes go. From those awkward first steps, to the classic moments we’ll remember forever, to the feature length movie that solidified SpongeBob as a worldwide phenomenon. Let’s not forget, however, the impact that this show has had on us, the viewer. From kids to adults, SpongeBob SquarePants brightens the day of anyone who watches his amusing misadventures (well, most people anyway, but that’s another story). Just to think, he’s done all of this while living in a pineapple under the sea.…

Another satirical technique used in Spongebob is the use of parody. Episodes of the show often use parodies of real life situations to make fun of things or people. An example of this comes across in the episode Texas. In this episode, Sandy Cheeks, an underwater squirrel is homesick, missing the open air of Texas. Trying to get Sandy to feel better, Spongebob plans a surprise party for her, using numerous creative ways to try and get her there. One…

The boys stranded on the island are different from each other; they must work together and use all their skills and power to help each other to be able to survive. “We can do all right on our own can’t we?” (Golding.145) the quote has a deep meaning into it, not just to rely on each other but to rely on ourselves and learn to be independent. It shows that the boys are fairly frightened for the upcoming event. Everyone leads themselves in their own paths. The decisions we make are personal. When piggy told Ralph his name, he was willing to take the risk and entrust Ralph that he wouldn’t tell anyone. Ralph told everyone what Piggy’s name was and that was Ralphs fault because he chose to say something very important to Piggy, and it hurts Piggy’s feelings. Ralph can easily lose piggy’s trust because of the choice he made. Even the point of where Jack decided to split apart was his own decision but it would’ve been best that they all stick together.
