Potato Chips Short Story
Potato Chips Jacquelyn opens the yellow bag, feeling the smell of the chips engulf her. Then the memories come, forcing themselves to the front of her mind.
Jackie returns from the kitchen with a bright yellow bag, brighter than the morning sun. She grabs the top between her fingers, the crackle of the bag alerts Jimmy of what she has. Jackie pulls apart the bag, feeling the rush of air towards her face. The smell of cholesterol engulfs her. She reaches in and pulls out one of the golden crisps. She places it on her tongue, letting the taste explode in her mouth. She finally makes her way to the couch, dropping herself down next to Jimmy. He reaches his hand towards the bag, but Jackie rips the bag away. “My chips!” she says, mouth full.

“Jimmy stop it! You’re scaring me!” she shoves at his chest, but his eyes don’t open and he makes no move to get up. Jackie forces a swallow, before yelling for their mother. Their mother comes barreling out of her office, she slides to a stop at the sight of her son’s head seeping blood, and his body pinning her daughter to the ground. She almost dives forward, she reaches for her son’s neck to feel for a pulse, when she feels none, she releases a scream of grief. She turns away, the sobs racking her body, before falling to her knees, screaming over losing her son. The memories fly by faster, the funeral, the first day she went back to school, the first Christmas without him, his birthdays, and the day he would have graduated high school.
Jacquelyn forces the memories to the back of her mind. Jackie died that day, the innocent little girl. Jackie was the reason Jimmy was dead. That’s why Jacquelyn is no longer Jackie. That’s why, Jimmy never got to be Jim.
Jackie is the reason why Jacquelyn doesn’t have a brother.
She glares at the potato chips gripped between her clenched fists, she thought that after twenty years, she could handle even the smell of the chips. Apparently not.
Jacquelyn drops the open bag of potato chips in her trash can as she walks

His initial reaction is much different, upon hearing that the police have recovered Susie’s hat and that the amount of blood they found indicates that she is likely dead, he immediately retreats away. “He was too devastated to reach out to [Abigail] sitting on the carpet…he could not let [her] see him” (Sebold 32). Jack does not know what to do or say to console his family and feels like it is his responsibility to stay strong for their sake. After the initial shock, Jack decides to devote his time to finding Susie’s killer, hoping that he will Susie as well. His efforts are focused on keeping busy so that he may not be reminded that Susie is gone. His constant guilt for not being able to help Susie when she needed it most withdraws him from his own family. Jack is still overcome with grief at times, leading him to break the bottled ships that he and Susie had worked on. He tries to make up for his emptiness by developing a relationship with Lindsey, to replace Susie. His grief also prevents him from developing a strong relationship with his son, Buckley, who constantly feels overshadowed by his older sister’s death. Jacks severe reactions greatly affect the relationships he still has; driving his wife away and forcing Lindsey to grow up prematurely. “[Jack] could see glimmers, like the colored flecks inside my mother’s eyes – things to hold on to” (Sebold 306). Eventually Jack can see that…

I am at one of the biggest super markets in Modesto, WinCo Foods. This store is one of the cleanest, organized, and best customer services I see ever since it first opened up several years ago. I go to the store twice every week. Every time I go inside, I am greeted by one of the employees standing by the sliding glass door. He smiles and says “Welcome to Winco, how is your day?” he sounds as if he’s a real good friend of mine who I known for years. Anyway, I go to buy some potatoes and eggs for dinner. I find the eggs, but couldn’t obtain the bag of potatoes because they were nowhere to be found. I ask a cashier about the potatoes and she went to check. While I am waiting, I am looking around only sighting parades of citizens walking around shopping with their kids running around playing tag. I see other employees working cash registers and helping other customers. Every employee I watch with their customers are having friendly conversations as if they were old friends catching up on things going on in their lives.…
