According to the Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information” (Positive Thinking). Being optimistic is absolutely mental. The Mayo Clinic shares the most effective ways to becoming optimistic, “If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way” (Positive thinking). In order to stay positive the person needs to know they can get over the challenges, “One fundamental attitude is to presume that all problems can be solved and we possess in us the ability to solve the problem in hand. Adopting such an attitude, we would explore all resources and go the extra mile to get things done” (Yew). It is possible to stay positive when conditions are not running…

A study done by Professor Barbara Fredrickson proves that positive thinking is better for bodies and minds. Fredrickson states, “Positive emotions expand our awareness, our ability to take in more and to see the bigger picture is facilitated.” (Malcolm). Here, she’s basically saying that if positivity is used then more minds will be open to suggestions and will see even more opportunities. A positive mindset can help physical health as well. “Having more moments of that open mindset helps us connect with others and it helps us build our resilience and our physical health because we become more energetic.” (Malcolm). Fredrickson is telling us that negative thinking causes bodies to have less energy and makes people moody which is never satisfying. When a positive attitude is used, it can be easy to notice by others and they can then tell if someone is approachable. “With positive emotions, there is more of an easiness in the torso and I think that’s consequently because other people can pick up and let others know that you’re safe to approach.”(Malcolm). Being visibly kind and approachable makes others want to be kind back and could possibly make them think positively as well. Positive thinking is a major factor of mental health and can directly affect multiple things in…

There are plenty of health effects if someone has negative thoughts, and there are numerous beneficial health effects if someone has positive thoughts. According to the Mayo Clinic, “It's also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activity, follow a healthier diet, and don't smoke or drink alcohol in excess”(Positive Thinking). If someone remains positive, which makes them live a healthier lifestyle, it can make the situation they are in a lot easier because they are healthy. A positive attitude can increase someone’s life span, better psychological and physical well-being, better cardiovascular health, reducement of common colds, lower rates of depression, and lower levels of distress. An example of a story where where the characters in a real life problem maintain a positive attitude is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. Bruno, a young boy whose father is a Nazi commandant, shows a positive attitude towards his new friend, Shmuel, a young Jewish boy. For example on page 386, “Shmuel! Here!” Said Bruno, stepping forward and putting the slices in his friend's hand. “Just eat them. There’s lots left for our tea --you don’t have to worry about that” (Boyne). Bruno’s actions show that a positive attitude can also improve the health of others. Bruno is happy that his friend is able to be with him at his house, and wants to make the best out of the situation. Since Bruno gives Shmuel food, it is beneficial for Shmuel’s health because he is starving and needs to eat. During tough times, people should have a positive attitude because it is healthy and it benefits their…
