Position vs. Time Graphs

Gizmo Warm-up
The Distance-Time Graphs GizmoTM shows a graph and a runner on a track. You can control the motion of the runner by manipulating the graph (drag the dots).

Move the slider so that the Number of points is 5. Under Runner 1 uncheck both Show graph and Show animation. Under Runner 2 check both Show graph and Show animation.

The graph should look like the one shown to the right.

1. Click the New button next to Runner 2. A new position vs. time graph will appear. Click the green Start button on the stopwatch.

2. Click the New button next to Runner 2. A new position vs. time graph will appear. In the upper right hand corner of the graph is a small camera icon. Click the camera icon. This will copy the image of the graph to your computer clipboard. Paste the image of your graph into the first cell of the table on the next page under the Graph image column. You may need to resize the graph to fit it in the table.

3. Write a description of what you think the motion of the runner will be in the column titled Description of the motion.

4. Click Start on the stopwatch and observe the runner. Record whether you were correct in incorrect in the next column. It’s OK to be incorrect! This is to help you track your learning.

5. Make any corrections to your description in the final column. Do not return to the second column and make changes.
