Through out the book you came into contact with characters who changed for the poor and others transformed into someone superior. Even though, they all matter Orleanna Price stood out the most. The type of person she was, was so debatable, but for me she was the one to notice.
Her short but meaningful sections in the beginning lead us through the whole book. Orleanna change was not like the others, it was more heartfelt. I couldn’t help but sympathize with her and try to put ourselfs in her position. Kingsolver succeeded in proving that Orleanna’s character was the most important. Orleanna’s character is crucial because she leads us through the story, provides an example of a women and how her experiences changed her.
Orleannas formed a foundation of what would come next. There was a reason why she told the story of her being past tense, her life was on pause. “Orleanna Price, Southern Baptist by marriage, mother of children living and dead. (pg. 7)” This foreshadowing sparks the “who is going to die” thought and makes the audience curious. As Orleanna talks she gives me insiders on what eventually happens. “But what else could we have thought? Only that it began and ended with us. What do we know, even now? Ask the children. Look at what they grew up to be.
We can only speak of the things we carried with us, and the things we took away. (pg.12)” We received a clue to the. girls future, we knew they all will end pleasant but how did they get there is one thing. What she was perceived as you could not have gotten unless you read her parts of

the book. “Sometimes I can merely say what it was. If I could, I would fling it at others, I’m afraid, at risk to their ease. I’d slide this awful story off my shoulders. (pg.11)” Orleanna describes her point of view, that you wouldn't have get without her part. I conclude that
Kingsolver put her voice as an opening to each part to have the

In the year 1959 Nathan Price, a Baptist minister from the heart of the southern United States, volunteers himself along with his wife and four daughters to travel into the heart of the treacherous African Congo on a mission to convert non-Christian natives of the small village, Kilanga. From the beginning of The Poisonwood Bible, a novel by author Barbara Kingsolver the reader sees the underlying theme of guilt told through the eyes of the wife and daughters of the Price family, which can be linked to the cultural arrogance of American society of both the past and present. Orleanna, Nathan’s wife, not only explains her personal guilt, but through it provides a reflection of the author’s commonly shared perspective about the colonization of Africa. She says, “Sometimes I pray to remember, other times I pray to forget. It makes no difference” (Kingsolver 89). The individual stories of each Price girl, each with its own distinctive tone and language intertwine to define the dynamics of the Price family as a whole, and therefore serves as aid to relate to the Price family, their personal struggles and most importantly to many facets of societal perspectives associated with Africa. This cultural arrogance is portrayed through the unique style of narration for each character and are also expressed extensively through the certain American characters found in the novel.…

For the duration of the story, O-lan proves to be not only strong but also incredibly useful. At first glance, O-lan does not resemble the prettiest of girls exteriorly, however that does not distract from her strength and usefulness or suitability to accomplish tasks that are just as important as tasks that the earth may complete. The earth again, may not always appear to be a beautiful feature but the earth almost always provides as well as proving to be strong. Such comparability between O-lan and the earth is exemplified by Lilith Saintcrow in Strange Angels, “Better to be strong than pretty and useless.”…

Their personal philosophies, meaning of life, and sense of harmony were all affected in an immense amount of different ways. Although, at first glance, the philosophies of Orleanna and Leah; and Ruth May and Adah, appear to be similar, they approach similar themes from different angles, fitting in on different spots of the spectrum. But while Orleanna takes her guilt to her heart, and constantly asks for forgiveness from her complicity, Leah obtains the relief on her own terms, comes to peace with her wrongs, and continues her search for justice. Adah views the balance in nature, observing the checks and balances in the natural system; Ruth May is the balance, and sees every event, every person who has ever lived, in a perfect ordinary harmony. Leah and Orelanna care about what they did to Africa, Adah and Rachel care more about what Africa did to them. Ruth May is everything in the middle, “‘All that is being is…

Oenone - Oenone put so much passion toward pleasing Phaedra that it brought her pain and destruction. After Phaedra turned against her, Oenone kills herself. Phadra explaining the death of Oenone to Theseus says, “Of my vile passion, make it known to you, abused my weakness and, by vicious rose, made haste to be the first one to accuse. For that she’s paid; fleeing my wrath, she found too mild a death in the waves is drowned” (Act V, Scene 7, Line 36-39). The passion that came from Phaedra had a hold on Oenone which caused her sorrow as well. Oenone had more of a deceiving type of character in the fact that she had to lie in order to please Phaedra. Oenone carried out her plan to tell Theseus that Hyppolytus had a specific feeling for his wife.…
