Posada
Children perform the Posada parades from December 16th to Christmas Eve. They act the story of Mary and Joseph looking for a room at an Inn, and 9 houses are visited, which are decorated with paper lanterns, evergreens, and moss. Mary and Joseph are not turned away again when the procession reaches the last house, and they are invited inside. Everyone in the parade enters, and they share prayers with the host. Then they celebrate with a party, which always includes a piñata. Following the last Posada on Christmas Eve, the Misa de Noche Buena Midnight Mass is one of the important Mexican Christmas traditions. Afterwards, relatives and close friends will join together for a large feast. Instead of writing their requests to Santa Claus, the children write to one of the Three Kings: Melchor, Gaspar, or …show more content…
Rosca de Reyes is eaten. This bread is decorated with dried and candied fruits that symbolize the crowns of the Kings, and a traditional figurine inside represents Mary and Joseph. The one who receives the slice of bread with the figurine hosts the dinner on February 2nd, the end of the Christmas Season. An American minister to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, saw a native plant turn bright red at Christmastime, and it reminded him of the Star of Bethlehem. The poinsettia plant has been a symbol of Christmas in the US since 1820. It was known as the “flower of the blessed night”, and it's frequently used to decorate Mexican Nativity processions. Mithra, the god of the regenerating sun, was reborn every year on December 25th. Mithraism was declared the official religion of the Roman Empire, and the Birthday of the Invincible Sun became an official holiday. Constantine the Great allowed the worship of Christianity, and the two celebrations were brought together on the same

On November first and second, All Saints day and All Souls day, Hispanics gather to celebrate in their own customs and intrigues according to their specific cultural region. Decorations range from skeletons, toys, elaborate costumes, paper cutouts, elaborate wreaths and crosses, flowers (commonly Marigolds), and candles. Many of these decorations are used to make altars in honor of the deceased. These…

Christmas is a holiday celebrated around the world. Children wait all night the evening before for santa to place their gifts beneath the tree. Excitement rages from them the morning of December twenty-fifth; pretty wrapping paper and shiny bows glisten under the christmas tree lights while the bulbs upon it sparkle so elegantly. However, Christmas is not about all these aspects that it is displayed as. Christmas has more meaning than pretty gifts and how many gifts each child has under the tree. This holiday is above the amount of money one kid gets while the next gets so little. Though some see Christmas as a materialistic holiday, it has far more depth than so little meaning. The Holiday of Christmas contrasts greatly with celebrations…

The day after marks Christmas Day, and commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. In the United States, this is an exciting day filled with toys and games and spending time with family. In Mexico, however, it is seen as a day to relax with family and friends and eat leftovers. Día de los Santos Reyes is celebrated the following year on January 6th, in which a series of nativity plays are put on in almost every church, reenacting the shepherds that follow the Star of Bethlehem and the visitation of the newborn Jesus. Major cities will often have gift and food stalls and outdoor dances and events.…

    Hopi Initiation Ceremony

To the Hopi, the initiation is constructed in a way that a child’s religious life begins in a state of seriousness and reflection. Motivated by a sense of doubt and skepticism, that the very nature of reality had become threatened (Gill, “Disenchantment”pg 66). While in many ways, this process of whipping, fear and realization is a rather unusual approach from childhood to adulthood. Some similarities can be made in the way many of our own religious traditions play out in our childhood experiences. For instance, Catholics around the world are presented with the idea that Santa is a real, functioning, possessed individual that grants us with happiness every December 25th. While many of us have experienced the harsh reality that Santa isn’t real and that this immortal like figure that we had been told, read about, dreamt about and envisioned, is actually a make belief thing. But despite this realization of Santa not being real at some point throughout your childhood, you still embody the traditional associations, rituals and celebrations of Santa Clause for the vast majority of your life. This same realization of reality can be seem in the children of the Hopi following their own initiation of reality to the Kachina, whipping and…

Sadly, we do not have the luxury of visiting our relatives every year but, we have gone twice during Christmas and New Year, and Christmas was celebrated quite differently. During these trips I learned a lot about my heritage and the importance of tradition. You don’t hear the words Santa Claus, and children don’t receive presents on Christmas Day. Instead, we celebrate Dia de los Reyes, or Three Kings’ Day which is celebrated on January 6th .This special holiday commemorates the three wise men who traveled a distance to bring gifts for the infant baby Jesus. Aside from this holiday, we also participated in las posadas, it is a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem, performed just before Christmas. Young adults perform these reenactments as they ride on donkey in the rancho, searching for hospitality. Once they are turned away three times, the entire community gathers together at the local church for warm bowls of pozole and mugs of chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate). This reenactment is crucial to our tradition as it is performed several times leading up to Christmas. During my stay in Mexico and participating in all these holidays I learned that there is much more to life than receiving the most gifts during the holidays. My stay there taught me to be humble and to value the important…

all the celebrations happening from mid-December to the beginning of January have been linked together in what has been called the Guadalupe-Reyes. In modern Mexico and particularly in the larger cities and in the North, local traditions are now being observed and intertwined with the greater North American Santa Claus tradition, as well as with other holidays such as Halloween, due to Americanization via film and television, creating an economy of gifting tradition that spans from Christmas Day until January 6. A piñata is made from papier-mache. It is created to look like popular people, animals, or fictional characters.…

25 December is the date of Christmas Day. It is one of the most popular holidays in Great Britain. Christmas is a joyful religious holiday when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas in My Family

In my family, the Christmas “fever” starts a week before. The first days are reserved for buying the gifts, carefully chosen for each member of the family. The next days, my mother is busy with preparing the Christmas dinner. The main kind of meat served during this meal is pork. A Romanian tradition is to sacrifice the pig on Saint Ignat’s day, and we respect it, than we make sausages and put some pieces to smoke. Before Christmas Eve, my mother cooks pork aspic, cabbage rolls, we call them “sarmale” and puts the sausages and steaks into the oven. After these come the sweets: sponge cakes with wall nuts, Turkish delights, raisins and the Christmas pie with sweetened cheese and raisins. All this time my father and I choose the “right” fire-tree and beautify the house with lights, artificial snow and other decorations. During the Christmas Eve afternoon, all the family adorn the Christmas tree and we go to church. In the evening we return home and wait for “Santa” listening Christmas songs (some of them sung by carol singers who wander from one house to another). We love Stefan Hrusca, the most famous Romanian carol singer, and Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby. In the Christmas morning we open the gifts and we are always surprised and happy. After all this comes the Christmas meal when the entire family gathers round the table enjoying that we are together and celebrating the birth of baby Jesus.…
