Popular Culture Paper
Culture can be viewed as the customs, arts and social interactions of a particular nation, people, or other social group (Yourdictionary.com, 2013) Popular culture is defined as “Cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people.” (Dictionary.com, 2013) Three major trends in popular American culture would be: Social networking, reality television, and technology. Social networking has changed how we do communicate, think and live our everyday life. Websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are very popular among people today. Facebook helps us to keep in contact with friends, family, and letting people know our thoughts. Twitter is a status updating site, and Instagram is the same but it only based on posting pictures.
Television is already popular, but the rise of reality television and become a huge trend. Reality shows vary from sports, music, food and much more. Shows such as American Idol and Master Chef are popular shows that viewers tune into. Technology is has become very popular over the years. Computers, laptops and smartphones have changed the way we do things today. It has made life easier for us in terms of communicating and staying connected with the rest of the world. Smartphones and tablets such as iPhone and iPad are two pieces of technology that are most popular to our society.
An example of how popular American culture affect personal decision making would be if a person see’s someone sees commercial on television for a new burger from Carl’s Jr. it will make them want to go there and try the burger because it looked good the commercial. Commercials also air on the internet so it would work the same way as television. The two most powerful sources of popular culture are television and the internet. A person’s activity is what generates popular culture. Examples of popular culture are television shows we watch, what music we listen to, what books we read, what clothes we wear, how we speak, and how we interact with other people. Popular American culture affects my everyday life. I don’t watch much television but when I do I mostly watch sports or movies on Netflix. I mostly listen to mostly hip hop and r & b music and I take in a lot from what I listen to and it affects my outlook on things and the decisions I make. Don’t read book very much outside of school but I do read the newspaper every day to keep up with what’s going on around the world. I get my sense of fashion from actors, musicians, and athletes that I look up to. I like the way they dress so I try to dress as close to them as possible.
Popular culture has big influence on whether we want it to or not. It is something that we cannot help. It helps us our way of thinking and how we make decisions and also determines how we speak. People come from different backgrounds and were brought up differently from others. What is normal in one culture may not be normal to another’s culture. I feel it bring us together as people. In my opinion, the number one thing popular American culture does for us is keep us in the loop of what’s going on and what is current. Without it, we would not know half of what we know.

Last week, I wrote about what I thought about the word “culture”, what it meant to me, and how it related of coming of age. I discussed on how culture to me meant the customs and beliefs of your past generation passed on to you and creating that to your image. This week I’ve now realized there are many other factors of culture that influence our way of life. Pop culture plays a big role if not more on who we are and how we behave. I discovered that many aspects like television and social media affect culture and change it frequently. In Tim Delaney’s ‘Pop Culture: An Overview’ he mentioned “popular culture encompasses the most immediate and contemporary aspects of our lives. These aspects are often subject to rapid change, especially in a highly…

Popular culture is defined as the ideas, interests, attitudes, etc. that are prominent among the majority of people, not just a specific group. With new developments in media and communications, such as the telephone and mass media, it was much easier for people to spread ideas across larger areas. As more people in an area began to have access to the same ideas, a popular culture began to emerge. Modernization, which was especially prominent in cities, also contributed to popular culture by allowing for the mass production of and wide-spread access to the same forms of products and entertainment.…

Popular culture includes television, the Internet, radio, and any other form of media. Although pop culture is indeed invasive, it can be beneficial by connecting people to the world by informing us on social, economical, and political issues, as well as current events. Without the Internet, television or radio, the world would not have found out about the government shutting down so quickly, nor would we have followed the presidential election so closely. Therefore, children can be educated on many subjects through the media without it impacting them in a negative way. Children can get a sense of how the adult world functions, and learn just by watching television, reading on the Internet, or simply listening to the radio. Pop culture in this sense helps people stay knowledgeable of everything going on in the world.…

On November Seventh, 2012 at 1:39 PM I went to Naan Stop to continue my observations from before. I went in and it was the same employee who has been working there all eight times I’ve gone in. As usual I was the only person there, the radio was playing a popular pop song by the band One Direction. The owner of the store was in the back and popped out to say hello to me and ask how I was doing. I got my usual, a small mocha Boba and I waited as the employee, a young Mexican probably in his 20’s made the Boba with the same frown he has on every time I come in. I stayed in Naan stop for twenty minutes and no one came in. On November Sixth 4:50 PM I went to Naan stop with my friend and we got Boba. We were the only ones in there at first but…
