1. Describe the life of the Aztecs. What is Tenochtitlan? How big was that city? The Aztecs were like any other society. Tenochtitlan was the capital city which had around 100,000 people.
2. What was sold at the Aztec market? They sold almost anything. Things such as hand woven cloth, food, and birds.
3. What was the main staple of the Aztec diet? The main staple of the Aztec diet was corn.
4. What were some of the reasons that Cortez wanted to conquer the Aztecs? Some reasons Cortez wanted to conquer the Aztecs was bacause they had gold and he felt that they were superior.
5. What were some of the biggest advantages the Spanish had over the Aztecs? The Aztecs were outnumbered and they had become overrun by disease.
6. What were the religious beliefs of both groups? Which group tried to convert the other one to their religion? The Aztecs had their no-named religion while the Spanish believed in Christianity. The Spanish tried to convert the Aztecs.
B. Write a short composition in English comparing and contrasting Mexico City today and Mexico City of long ago (Tenochtitlan). Be sure to include:

Lifestyle in general There are many differences and similarites between Mexico City now and when it was called Tenochtitlan. One difference is population. In Tenochtitlan, there were 100,000 people living the opposed to the eight million they have now. Another difference was mode of transportation. Tenochtitlan had canals and recieved horses right before the fall of the Aztec Empire and now they have cars. The ruins have become, well ruined, since they were weathered down and whatnot. Their lifestyle in general seems to be more modernized now. Last difference is that Tenochtitlan was an empire and now Mexico City has a democracy.

Cortes played a large role for the Spanish victory over Aztecs. This can be seen in one example by the fact that he was able to make allies with the local Mexican people, as a result it made his conquest stronger, and likely to be more successful as it meant he could use local knowledge and local resources, “He [Cortés] … left them a large wooden cross set up on an elevation, and they remained very satisfied … thus these Indians became our friends”. Although this source is from a group that supported Cortes, and therefore likely to promote his achievements, as they were at the event they are likely to correctly reflect the relationship created between Cortes and the local people. During Cortes’s exploration, he dealt with many hardships because of the difficult terrain and Indian people he had encountered along the way.
