What is a friend? According to the English dictionary, a friend is someone with whom an affectionate bond is shared with. This definition can be interpreted in many different ways in regards to what a friend does or the boundaries a friend has, but all interpretations have one thing in common and that is the special bond between people. According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, the definition of friendship is “the state of being friends; the relationship between friends,” emphasis on “relationship”. Although it has a positive connotation, a friendship isn’t always going to be a great one. We see this in John Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice and Men. Two long time friends, George and Lennie go through constant difficulties, struggling to obtain “ the American Dream” a reoccurring theme in many of Steinbeck's pieces. We notice that Lennie isn’t all there, there is something about him that would be detected today with our advanced technology, but wouldn’t be detected back then, so he was just seen as dumb. With the mentality of a very young child and the strength of a bull,…

Friendships of utility are based on people who are useful to each other. This is the sole reason behind them being friends. A good example of a friendship of utility might be the relationship between a car salesman and a car buyer (John L. Fjellstad). The car salesman needs the buyer because he has to make a living and the buyer needs the salesman because he needs a car. Both have something the other wants. These friendships do not last very long as once the buyer is no longer useful to the salesman, or visa versa, the connection is severed and the friendship ceases to be. Friendships of utility…

Friendship is a very powerful word. As children are growing up, their parents and family give them a taste of what friendship really is all about. Starting at a young age, it is smart for parents to teach children the significance of friendship. A friend should be someone who tells the other individual when they are doing wrong. They should influence them to do good, give them a shoulder to cry on, and be that person to talk to when sad. Friendships change over time as you move from childhood to adulthood, however, friendship exists in the positive relationships a person builds.…

Aristotle once said, “Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.” There are many things that go into the process of friendship. Some people deal with friendship one way while others deal with it in another way. Cicero had a lot to say about the different aspects of friendship in his time, but how would he view modern friendship? Some friendships Cicero may not be proud of; like the common relationships that are forced on in a classroom or work place and the lack of allowing nature to take control and make the friendships that are meant to happen. However, Cicero would be happy with the way the higher level friendships have developed in virtue and value.…
