Answer Thailand’s political atmosphere has experienced dramatic changes from time to time since the collapse of the absolute monarchy. Before 1932, Thailand was an absolute monarchy country in which the power to administrate the country was given to the king. However, “The Thai absolute monarchy was overthrown by the People’s Party in 1932 and it ushered in a new political era. The Revolution of 1932 succeeded in overcoming the absolute monarchy and establishing a democratic system. Yet the establishment of a democratic political system did not proceed smoothly, as the king and his royalist supporters were un-willing to accept genuine change in the country’s administration” (Nattapoll Chaiching).
Moreover, a major obstacle of the development of the newly established democracy could be taken in to account with the military’s interference as the country’s politics since 1932 has been dominated by the military. The monarch’s role in Thai politics from 1932 until 1957 was not as highly influential as it was in the 20th century because the domination of the military effectively ended the role. At that time the king as well as the royalist and his supporters were trying to reclaim political power. “However, the Revolution of 1932 not only did not result in the consolidation of the monarch’s power, but also transferred the monarch’s power to the common people according to the constitution of 27 June 1932” (Nattapoll Chaiching). A Year later, there was a silent coup d’état against the left-wing leader of the People’s Party which was lead by the royalist. The 1933 coup brought back the king’s political power. As soon as the coup succeeded, the king wanted to destroy the People’s Party, therefore appointing his own loyal officers to take charge of the military. Up until then, the military before was led by the members of the People’s Party.
