Political Crisis
The recent political crisis in Mali has something to do with the Tuareg people that live in this region and the general religion of the region. The Tuareg people are nomadic farmers. North Africa is primarily Muslim and is heavily influenced by what happens in the Muslim world. Muslim rebel groups like the Ansar Dine seek a nation that abides by Islamic Law. Others like the Islamic Movement for Azawad seek an independent state in Northern Mali and acknowledgement of that state by the world. Mali, like most of North Africa seeks an Islamic government. The NMLA (the National Movement for Liberation of Azawad) is a Tuareg lead group that is fighting for the rights of the nomadic Tuareg people. Mali’s government has never really had much power. In 1979 when the constitution was established Mali still remained under the heavy military control. Then when Mali was a democratic government citizens question the government’s legitimacy when president Toure won in a landslide election in 2002. In 2012 Captain Amadou Sanogo lead a military that ousted president Toure. Also the government has had trouble dealing with rebel groups in the north. Rebel groups like the Ansar Dine and Mujao have taken control of many cities in North Mali. These rebel groups are growing stronger in the passing months, and the government has not been able to stop it.
The citizens have had little say in Mali, there was a brief period from 1991 tot the present where the citizens have had a say in the government, the Malian government for the most part has been an authoritarian government. Civilian protest has had little effect on the government in place. The only groups that have been able to make any change are the extremist rebel groups that have taken control of the north.
The Mali army is ill equipped to fight this rebel threat. Under president Amadou Toure, the government put their money and resources into fight the MNLA and had ignored the Islamic groups. This allowed the Islamic rebel groups

The book I have chosen was A Long Way Gone, I have read a lot about the war in Sierra Leone in 1991, where the book was based around. The war had started when the Special Forces of Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) had interviewed with Sierra Leone to try to take down the government. There was a lot of talk about how the human rights had joined in to help stop this war, not doing much to help thought. This war was characterized by “extreme brutality and widespread human rights abuses against civilians.” There was a lot of brutalities thought out this war, to warriors and civilians.…

As a citizen of Mali, I feel that Mansa Musa did a quite bold, and brave thing, that cost him many followers trust, but a new trade route in return. I however, am certainly not one of those “ex- followers”, for I find his strategy to be heroic. Even though he betrayed and stole from his citizens, in the long run, he meant well, and in a way, paid them all back. Mali was just average, until Mansa Musa came along. Under his ruling, our kingdom became twice the size that Ghana was. Because of him, we stayed strong for almost two hundred years. Mansa Musa always wanted the best for his kingdom, and had to make sacrifices along the way to get it where it is today.…

The intensification of the rebellion was one of the consequences of the AFRICOM coordinated NATO intervention in Libya and the overthrow of the Gadhdhafi regime.[76] Gadhdhafi’s fall led many Tuareg who had been part of his security forces or who had been working in Libya to flee into north Mali with weapons. There they joined disillusioned Tuareg tribesman.[77] The case of Iyad Ag Ghali is noteworthy. Rumoured to be the head of the Ansar Dine group operating in Timbuktu and Gao, Ghali had previously fought alongside Gadhdhafi and had been requested by the Libyan National Transitional Council to desert the regime.[78] He accepted and, with other heavily-armed fighters, fled to Mali, joining with other Tuareg and forming Ansar…

Western Mali now fears that the Islamists will utilize the rest of the country to disrupt West African as a whole. Recently, “heavily armed gunmen shouting ‘Alluhu akbar’ stormed a Radisson Blu Hotel” (Searcey). The attack in Bamako November 20, 2015, resulted in 21 people dead and about 170 hostages. Two of the people found dead were militants. Later in the week, it was discovered that about 30 people were able to escape during the siege.
