Poetry Slam
On my visit to Bar13 I was instructed to watch a poetry slam. I have never experience such a vivid art of performing poetry. The only way I had experienced poetry before was by reading it from books. This has change the way I see poetry now. The poetry slam is a very competitive event in which the poets perform their work. The poets are judged by people of the audience. The host, who was pregnant, selected the judges who were instructed to give a numerical score (the score being 0 – 10). The score was based on the poets’ content and performance.
I was a little hesitant when the host asked me to be a judge. Since this was the first time, I was scared that I wasn’t going to be a fair judge. The host explained to me the basic rules for the contest and how the poets are selected. The first rule one is that each poem must be the poet’s own work. The second is that each poet gets only three minutes to read or say the poem. The third is that they can’t use any musical instrument or costumes and the fourth and last one is that from the score the poets receive the high and low scores are dropped and the middle three are added together giving them a total score of 0 – 30.
Before the contest started the microphone was open to other poets. In my opinion there were a couple of poets who were good. After the opening performance was done, the host presented a poet who has competed before. Her name was Gypsee. She performed for about 45 minutes, the content of her work was very good and her performance was excellent. I think she has practice a lot. I remember clearly two of her poems. One talked about crossing the Canadian bridge into the United States as an immigrant (she was born in Albania). The second one was about her childhood and soldiers with shotguns.
During the slam there was different kind of poetry. It was very interesting to listen to a diverse range of work within the slam. It included love poetry, social issues, personal problems and even some were kind of comic. What I really like was the range of poets presented; they are free to do work in any style on any subject. I will recommend it to my friends and I would like to go back, it was a nice experience.

An author writes a book or novel to have the whole story put right out for you with a clear cut beginning middle and end. A poet can write a “novel” in very minimal lines or a few verses. They tell a story but give the rest for you to think and ponder about. A poet uses multiple literary devices in one single poem. When reading a poem you have to decode or decipher what the poet is really trying to say. They may use metaphors, irony and much more, in the poem “I Finally managed to speak to her”, the poet, Hal Sirowitz uses both of these literary devices.…

In Walter Hill’s second poem, a member in the audience asked the question “why am I here”? This question helped open the poem; I never knew that a poet could interact with the audience as part of the poem. I knew that all poems don’t need to follow traditional rules like strict iambic pentameter and restricted topics as we saw in many poems we have read this year, but Walter’s poem really displayed that a poem can be written however the poet pleases. Liam Wholihan wrote an acrostic poem which was also ery different than I have encountered in the…

Another point to the evaluation is for the sound and wordplay. I thought that the poem Jumping Rope displayed just that. In a lot of poems that author will rhyme every other word. But in this one, every word rhymed with rope. Rope, dope, rope, hope and rope was the pattern throughout the poem. The balance of repetition gave the poem that catchy rhythm that kids remember even when they are older.…

    We Real Cool

In this paper the topic that will be written about is the poem entitled “We Real Cool”. This poem was written in 1960 by a woman named Gwendolyn Brooks. In this paper three topics have been selected so that this poem will be able to be analyzed. With each element, it will de discussed how those elements affected and interested me while reading. The three elements that have been written about are form, language, and content. Form, in poetry, can be understood as the physical structure of the poem: the length of the lines, their rhythms, their system of rhymes and repetition (The Poetry Archive, 2005-2010). Form is the technical word for the look and sound of language (Kwikguide, 2009). In a poem, form is largely what separates itself from other types of literary works. Poetry is easily distinguishable from a short story or a play by the arrangement the author chooses to organize his or her thoughts. Words contain meaning this is their content. (Kwikguide, 2009). The content of a poem is essentially the subject matter and conveys the scene, an event, or even a feeling. Language in poetry is defined as something spoken from the heart. These three elements come together to express a specific sentiment from the author, but more importantly, to evoke an emotional response from its reader.…

After reading Nikki Giovanni “Poetry”out loud several times I was able to make my son laugh. I used a energetic voice. With this poem I was able to bring hope and happiness to the audience. In this voice felt as though I was at a seminar or in front group of people. I was definitely a speaker or motivational speaker inspiring many about the love I have for poetry. At the part when I became to talk about the feelings I have after midnight and while I was sleep seemed to have brought them in closer to the poem. Even though they didn't quite understand all of the word choices.…

In Marianne Moore’s “Poetry,” the speaker expresses her deep feelings on poetry. Through her exploration of poetry, she discovered that it was different than what she originally thought. It really was not as bad as what people made it out to be. It was actually something worth reading. She essentially realized that poetry is something that one must discover before they can truly make a judgement of how they feel about it. Poetry is not something for everyone, but those who do love poetry must discover before they truly know of how great it is. Even with this, most people who have read poetry appreciate it. It is very different from other forms of writing, but it will still always tell a…

    2. Who is the speaker in the poem? How would you describe this persona? Ms. Laux has worked as a sanatorium cook, a gas station manager, a maid, and a donut holer before receiving a B.A. in English from Mills College in 1988; therefore, I think she used her own life experience to write this poem (Dorianne). In an online posting, Dorianne Laux explains, “’Every poem I write, I write for myself, to relieve some pressure, to try to get something right. I want the viewer, or reader, to see what I’ve seen, to know it the way I’ve known it…’” (Guest).…

    Plato and Sidney

Poetry has been around for many centuries and has influenced people all over the world. In prehistoric and ancient societies, poetry was used as a way to record cultural events or to explain stories. Poetry could have been used in many different styles or techniques, and because of this, there have been discussions over what form of poetry would be best appropriate based on one’s culture or society. Two perfect examples of these controversies over the function of poetry are shown in The Republic by Plato and in The Defense of Poesy by Sir Philip Sidney. These two pieces describe the critics’ opinion over what poetry should be. Even though Plato and Sidney had different, as well as some similar, views concerning the purpose and use of poetry, these views were all based on the culture and society in which they were surrounded, as well as the time period in which they lived.…
