I recently had the honor of interviewing someone in our community who has had more than thirty years of leadership experience in our community. The interview ended up taking much longer than I expected because I was so influenced by what he had to say, I did not want to miss anything. Mr. Kevin Henderson started his career as a cook back in the 60's for the Jolly Ox (Steak & Ale) restaurant. His leadership abilities were quickly realized, and he was promoted to Store manager. From there he moved on to the Shoney's Restaurant Corporation where he remained for twenty five years serving as a regional supervisor, and finally working his way up to the President of the Steak House Division of Shoney's. This consisted…

In practice, he always gave me advice on the best way to cut to the basket, how to dribble the ball with your left. He is truly a very humble and positive person. My second reason would be for my favorite player Los Angeles Laker guard Kobe Bryant. He plays with so much emotion and his work ethic is on some other worldly level, I looked up to him; hitting those clutch shots to win the game and give his team the best opportunity to win games and of course five titles which proves he is one of the greatest to play the game. I remember when my dad had surgery, we watch the NBA playoffs and saw the Lakers down by 10 and bang, Kobe with the pass, shot, dunk and just screams of excitement. I…

We had about eight different coaches, basically four coaches from both schools. Our head coach name was Emmanuel Powell, he was a big but not fat bald head black guy. Honestly, he was the funniest of them all. He always gave us a laugh even when he was mad at us, it never fail. All of our coaches was real cool, they were like fathers but like brothers at the same time. They made sure we was doing good in the classes and even in life. They kept kids out of trouble, some coaches use to let the players sleep over if they had family problems. We built a good bond with the coaches. We also had a good season my sophomore, we made it to the fourth round of the…

Everyone has someone who they see as a very inspirational person in their life. For me, that’s Vince Lombardi, the former coach of the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins. He led the Packers to a total of 89 games won, 29 lost, and 4 tied. Also led them to 5 championships, 3 NFL championships and 2 Super Bowl championships after the change was made. At the end of his career when he moved to Washington, he led the Redskins to a respectable 7 games won, 5 lost, and 2 tied.…

My Dad is someone who I would say has had the most ups and downs in his life. He has always made in important to try and be the best person he possibly can. However, human nature only allows you to be ‘so good’ and he does, like anybody else would, have some traits that one would say are less than positive. Despite my dad being a good and bad person with both positive and negative traits, if I had to pick someone that I admired most, I would pick my dad.…

Horcher, my high school coach. Not only did he influence me to become better in sports he pushed me to become the best I can be, but he also advised me to keep up with my studies and give it my best in that aspect as well. I can still recall, every week when we would stay after school to practice on both my reading and writing at the time I wasn't the best,I knew I needed help and I was determined to give it my all since I knew that I needed a hand so I reached out and he helped. He stated “As long as you keep winning us basketball games and keep up with your grades you’ll go places kid”. Those words are still in my head till this day. As a result, we won many games and won a couple dollars for the school. I can certainly say that I am grateful for this man for showing me the power of not giving up and always trying your best. The determination I acquired is something I will never…
