Pneumatology: The Holy Spirit
The Greek words pneuma, meaning spirit, and logos, meaning doctrine, make up the word pneumatology. Pneumatology is the doctrine of the Holy Spirit (Bere and Horton 169). The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He enters into a person’s heart when they except Jesus as their Lord and Savior. It is impossible to live a triumphant Christian life without being aware and knowing the works of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is a person, just like God and Jesus. Some proof of this is that He was given a proper name. In John 14:26, Jesus called Him “the Comforter” (KJV), and in John 14:17, Jesus calls Him the “Spirit of Truth” (KJV). Each member of the Trinity was present in the creation of the universe and all in it. Genesis 1:2 says, “… And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (KJV). One of the Holy Spirits most important works was when He inspired the men of God who wrote the Bible. The Holy Ghost also empowered many people in the Bible. Bezaleel (Exodus 31:2-3 KJV), Gideon (Judges 6:34), Samson ( Judges 13:25 KJV), David (I Samuel 16:13 KJV), and many other Christians of all ages have been empowered by the Holy Spirit (Bere and Horton 176).
The Holy Spirit is also doing work in the present. Ever since Jesus was glorified in the upper room after His resurrection, every born again Christian receives the person of the Holy Spirit after salvation. When a person accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they also accept the Spirit to dwell within their heart. Once a person becomes a Christian and has the Spirit in their heart, that person will never have to pray for the presence of Him in their life, even though Christians should pray for Him to be sown in their life (Bere and Horton 176).
