It also continues to encourage children to get up and be more active with their play time. There is a lot of talk on the news about how society, as a whole, has become less and less active over the past twenty to thirty years. With modern conveniences like television, gaming systems, video games, and even small things like cell phones and the I Pad, people have been spending less and less time outside and even less enjoying recreational activities. When decades ago, children and adults alike spent more time outside and time…
Children are not as active outside and in sports , video games and electronics have become the new ‘busy’ activities…
Rampage, shootings, killing, murder, blood, and gore are all things that people think of when they hear the words, “Video Game.” Video games have quickly taken on the role of being harmful too kids. Could this be true? Crime rates have been on the rise for the last five decades, so we must ask do video games have anything to do with this? Are video games destroying our children? Every time a school shooting happens people look for something to blame. Furthermore, in the more recent decades people have been blaming the violence of video games, for in these games you have weapons that you often use to kill people or other things with. These games have been said to be extremely graphic and aggressive and have many parents worried. However, after reading many essay’s including, “Art Form for the Digital Age,” by Henry Jenkins, and “Do Video Games Kill?” by Karen Sternheimer, I changed the way that I viewed video games. Before reading these essay’s, I felt as if video games had no other purpose but just to be aggressive, but now I see that video games are not all bad, for they are also a form of art, and art is not to blame for children being violent. Therefore, video games do have other purposes and are not completely bad for kids.…
New forms of technology and thinking has granted us with great opportunities such as medicine and creative social interactions. The human race has taken something as small as discovering electricity for a light bulb to creating smartphones. As mankind advances, many individuals look at different ways of solving unknown mysteries. Some people look to outlets that many don't dare to look towards, one of those people being Will Wright. Will Wright discusses in his article “Dream Machines” that video games “benefit rather than denigrate culture” (212). For years, many people have blamed video games for the violence among white youth, however Will Wright presents an outstanding argument on how video games can be a positive influence on the world such as progressive new ways of thinking and new technology.…
Nature is full of beautiful sites that people enjoy seeing. If the outdoors is so amazing then why do children tend to stay inside instead of going outside? Today’s children enjoy playing video games more than going out running in the forest because it brings them more excitement. Some children don’t like getting their hands dirty, so they like video games more than the outdoors. There are many beautiful things to see outside rather than that plain old TV screen. By allowing your child to stay inside daily, it can and will have effects on the child’s outdoor experience. Children should go outside and play while they are still youthful, because they will not be a young age forever.…
Video and computer games, like many popular, entertaining and addicting kid activities, are looked down on by many parents as time wasters, but why?, is it because they are harmful?, or is it simply because they are spending too much time on them instead of studying. Both have many good arguments, but I am going to write about the one in which I feel are most valid.…
Years ago, computers were not so easily accessible, and life was not filled with electronic equipment and electronic games. Children would spend time outdoors. However, today children spend free time indoors watching television and playing video games using the technology of electronic equipment. This may make parents comfortable because in this changing world it allows them to control where their children are but allowing them to play outdoors is proven to improve their lives. According to a study of UK children three quarters spend less time outside than prison inmates. The study revealed a fifth of the children did not play outside at all on an average day. “The survey questioned a nationally representative sample of 2,000 parents of 5-12 year olds and found 74% of children spent less than 60 minutes playing outside each…
It challneges the idea that if kids were not watching tv, or on computers would they still be outside playing? the passage arugues that screen time helps children learn and can even help toddlers pick up on speech habbits. The passage goes on to state that in 2015 the AAP changed its guidelines for children screen times, saying it now supports parents playing video games with their children. Which is a good way to form relationships with your children, all while helping them learn new soacial skills and good comunication. A good educational game would be a great way to start…
Steven Johnson begins his article by describing what the critics say about video games. First, they are a great waste of time says Dr. Spock. At their worst, they promote violent responses from children. The main argument about video games is that they take away from children reading. Then the author presents the reasons that reading is so good for people. However, the author then says that a lot of the criticism about video games is because they are being judged by old standards by people who believe reading is the main way for children to learn skills. He asks the reader to think of a world where video games came before books. Then he argues that the criticisms of books would look a certain way. The criticisms are the author’s way of showing benefits of video games, like they are three-dimensional, and they have strong visual images and sound. The user uses complex motor skills to navigate them. Also, he shows that the children interact with the games and can control what happens in them.…
As Lahey explained, giving a chance to children to play freely without being guarded and told what to do is really good. When its planned when ,how, where and with whom they should be playing, children will be limited to learn life skills. When children play freely ,they learn to choose their space, their ability or power, friends, and time management. However, when children are all told what to do and someone is behind their shoulders, it’s difficult to build confidence and stability to make any judgements. The author said, “ Unscheduled, supervised, playing is one of the most valuable educational opportunities we give our children.” This mean, when children are out of school for summer or any other breaks, family should encourage them to play…
Over the decades after school outdoor play has been dropping drastically which what else can you expect when are children are growing up in the age of facebook, twitter, x box, Netflix and iPads kids are more plugged into technology than ever before. Playing outside is becoming as obsolete as CD players. In this day in age it is normal for you to see fewer children outside playing on a sunny day because they are so wrapped up in TV and computers which is healthy for our society at all. There are all sorts of reasons for the decline of outdoor play but here are some: flawed assumptions about learning meaning that play that was considered as the expected tool to help children learn naturally is now being considered as a distraction from ‘actual learning’, high academic and achievement pressure because adult expectations from children have become so demanding that it leaves children with little freedom to do what interests them, or what is fundamentally essential for them, increased safety issues in the society, limited play spaces, and decrease in time available to parents in their fast paced routines, children’s outdoor play tends to suffer. Clearly parents and educators need to make sure that future generations get plenty of outdoor play because it very beneficial for their cognitive development this is because it outdoor play allows children to use their instincts in a natural and non-restrictive environment , this allows for them to develop their creative, imaginative, and thinking capabilities and social relationships with others. Various research studies have highlighted that regular physical activity contributes in generating new brain cells, enhances cognitive processes, increases attention span and catalyzes the overall cognitive processes. We now more than ever need to reverse the trend of diminishing outdoor play for children. Caregivers, educators as well as policy makers are all responsible for advocating and…
Visual entertainment media has shaped American culture and values in many ways. There are so many forms of entertainment nowadays that it has cause many of us including our children to forget what is more important. For example we now use the Internet to rely on so many things, like information. When at one point in time we would use books or news papers. Video games, Internet, cell phones and things like this have taken away from our values of taking time out to enjoy a book. The children of today won’t even take time out to play outside they are more concerned with playing their video games. There was a time where children played outside everyday and that was a form of exercise but now all they want to do is watch television, play games and be on the Internet and their cell phones.…
Technology has grown so much over the years and you can do so much with it now. You can read books, shop, and play games without having to be in contact with others. This limitation of human contact has had a negative effect on people's lives. The reason why it has negative effects on people's lives is because some people never get that fresh air anymore and some people do not know how to act around others. Since technology has grown, several people are less likely to leave their houses. Those people who get so caught up in the Internet world never want to leave their homes and go out into the real world. In our generation, children would rather play video games than go outside and ride bikes. It is not all children that do this but it is most of the children and…
My observation is that kids would rather play video games then pay attention in school and do the work. Kids get bored with school having to go five days a week for about nine months. Kids enjoy the weekends and having free time to themselves.…
Therefore, video games can have bad effects on children. We should direct our children to use diverse means of entertainment that could also be useful. Some computer games are designed to mingle education and entertainment in one package. Children should also practice other outdoor activities and socialise…
