Pleasant Place To Be, By Nikki Giovanni
Poetry is a type of writing that may or may not explain nature and life in curious terms. Poetry may give insight into erosion, or the loveliness of a snow fall. It might describe the moon as an ordinary object, such as a balloon.
Some poetry can teach life lessons, like living without a partner. As it states in the poem, The World is Not a Pleasant Place to Be, written by Nikki Giovanni. The first stanza states, “the world is not a pleasant place to be without someone to hold and be held by”. Everybody wants someone to love, and someone to be loved by. When a person is all alone it makes for a lonely lifestyle. This poem points to the knowledge that without having a reason to exist, then there is no reason to breathe.

One of my favorite poems is “poetry.” Poetry is a poem about poets using poetry to express themselves and not to impress anybody. She uses metaphors to show what poetry is, she says “A poem is pure energy.” These types of metaphors help the reader picture what the poems trying to say. She also uses personification to also have a better understanding.…

    Embrace by Billy Collins

The action of this man is representative of different points of view. From one angle, it is a couple in an embrace, from another; it is a crazy, lonely man. This poem is a portrait of neither Billy Collins nor his foil, but of a persona representing the average human being. Not to suggest every person is desperate and lonely, but saying that he might be so if he were lost with no distinct identity or anyone to love him.…

“Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken,” according to the staff of Dictionay.com (1). Another individual might argue that poetry, is indeed the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings (Wordsworth 1). One demands simple things of a poem; a poem must have a meaning, a logical message to society, an intellectual impact or an emotional impact, and lastly, some sort of rhyme scheme. While it is easy to say that the typical place for a poem, to be heard or seen, is in an English classroom setting read out loud by a teacher; poems are actually naturally found anywhere weather realized or not. A very common place where poetry is found, but often overlooked, is in music. There is no doubt that poetry is found in music and music is poetry. It is unquestionable that the song “Imagine” by John Lennon is a form of poetry. It has meaning, a logical message to society, an emotional and intellectual impact, and a literary device, which subjectively, is poetry.…

Nadain (2002) describes poetry as a puzzle: “you piece together words to form a beautiful image. When everything fits together perfectly, you are left with a breath-taking product” (p.31): a breath-taking, emotional experience. Poetry is used as a way of expressing and finding meaning in few words. A melody of passion flowing out onto the pages, words that flow into each other and yet express the inner most thoughts and feelings of those who read the words. It is a gift, being able to illuminate words so that they form a picture, express a feeling and share a thought in so few words. Unlike telling a story or writing a novel that explains every intricate detail, a poem leaves you to draw your own conclusion and create structure and order to your personal nature (Shaw, 2008. P. 175).…

Poetry challenges our brain to think outside its comfort zone. Our brains like to stitch information together in a rational form, poetry clashes head on with your brain and forces it to look at emotions not as an abstract feeling but as a tangible object that we can relate to. Poetry is like a cavern, if you have a flashlight you still won’t be able to fully study its meaning for existence. You need something more, something brighter like your brain. Your brain will take bits of information and weave it together like a puzzle until something rational is both reasonable and likely.…

    Stephen Burt's Poems

According to Stephen Burt, poems work by combining words into patterns intended to evoke emotion in their readers. Poetry is an attempt, according to Burt, to make people “happier, sadder, and more alive” (citation). The word poem, in the original Greek, just means ‘something made.’ Of its many functions, perhaps the most important function is helping people to make sense of themselves and the world around them, including troubling concepts such as death. Stephen Burt spoke of his difficulty processing abstract thoughts and feelings without putting them into words. Poetry exists, at least in part, to serve this very purpose.…

Poetry is a form of literature that is expressive and can sometimes communicate a message more effectively than prose. It can be filled with literary elements and vivid language that can help poets relay their message to the readers. What is fascinating about poetry, is that each poem can relate to a person in multiple ways. In the poems "Harlem" and "Weary Blues" Langston Hughes uses language that effectively communicates the overall themes of both poems and relates to the African American experience at the time.…
