Play Doh Reflection

Picking my Christmas present for the first time, I gravitated towards the Play-Doh dentistry set. In hindsight, maybe I selected it because I used to spend time at my grandpa’s dental clinic but I believe I was instinctively drawn to this set because of the tools that came with it. I still recall the excitement that came over me when I made teeth and cavities with the Play-Doh. Today, I still gravitate to activities that allow me to use my creativity with tools in order to produce pleasing things; whether it’s an intricate knitted scarf, a delicate beaded bracelet or playing a complex violin concerto, they all require a high level of manual dexterity. Playing the violin has instilled in me the importance of a millimeter, as it’s the distance between two unique notes.
As a child, I had crooked teeth and an underbite. Being self-conscious about my smile, I never showed my true emotions. Through the use of a palate expander, braces, and elastics, my orthodontist was able to correct my crooked teeth, which increased my self-confidence. Fascinated by the way she solved problems, I became inspired by her immaculate precision and the way she was extremely patient with every single patient. My most profound moment during my trip was when we were leaving to go back to Vancouver, a little girl Yosemarie smiled and whispered “Gracias!” Ever since I left, “Gracias!” has remained a constant reminder that I want to find a professional job that will allow me to serve others. The thought that just by teaching Yosemarie English, she was grateful fulfilled my internal satisfaction and made me realize that I want to be a pediatric dentist.
