Planet Tralfamadore Analysis
Genre #5: Post Card highlights the story of Billy Pilgrim's travel to the planet Tralfamadore. Like many places tourist go they often grab a 75 cent postcard to remember the places they went. Since Billy went to another planet I wanted to do something traveling related. I thought about doing a brochure or design a website but then I remembered what people do when they go vacationing, they buy something to remember the memories they had at that place. The postcard contains the aliens as well since they shaped Pilgrims view on life and time after his encounter with them. There might be a better genre to display the visit to Tralfamadore but doing a postcard sounded like a fun and creative path to take.

The struggles of the Kurds under Turkish domination and that of the Algerians under French domination have long histories, and there are important comparisons to be made between the two. Frantz Fanon was a psychiatrist, originally from Martinique, who supported the Algerian revolution against French colonialism. In his book “The Wretched of the Earth”, Fanon argues that violence is a necessary factor in decolonization. His justification for anti-colonial violence is rationalized by his analysis of European colonial rule, which he characterizes as inherently violent itself. The French used violence to usurp Algerian land, deny Algerians full citizenship, and denounce their cultural and religious practices. Similarly, the Kurds were denied…

‘Postcard’ is a poem by Skrzynecki about the arrival of a postcard for his parents. As Skrzynecki’s culture is different from his parents, as he is Australian and they are Polish, this poem represents an emotional journey and a promised physical journey to come. The title ‘Postcard’ is a connotation as the readers first thoughts of a postcard as being an insignificant event, however this is juxtaposed by the intense emotional journey that can be brought about by something small and seemingly unimportant shown throughout the entire poem.…

Filippino Lippi painted St. Philip Exorcising the Demon in the Temple of Mars between the years 1487 and 1502 for the Strozzi Chapel in Florence, Italy. The composition is rectangular. The focal point is St. Philip’s out-stretched arm near the bottom left. Following the implied line of St. Philip’s pointed finger leads the viewer up towards the statue of Mars. The viewer is then led back down to the falling prince near the fresco’s right corner. The line of sight within the crowd leads down to a dragonesque demon. Behind the demon is the rod of St. Philip, which leads the viewer slightly up to the crowd of priests in the left corner, and back to the focal point. The implied line from St. Philip to the statue of Mars, and back down to the crowd of people on the right creates a triangle within the work. This triangle is further emphasized through the use of color.…

In “The Loss of the Creature,” Walker Percy describes how the modern society presents packaged experience to people and how the true values of experience via confrontation is being ruined because of that “preformed complex” (460). The travelers these days in the Grand Canyon will not see the same values and beauty that Garcia López de Cárdenas did, because they already pre-experienced the values of the Grand Canyon via “appropriated symbolic complex”; Percy describes this as the difference between the “sightseers” and “discoverers,” saying, “the thing is no longer the thing as it confronted” (459). The couple traveling in Mexico, who accidently ends up staying at a town that they never planned to visit, will enjoy their trip. They still are mere “sightseers,” however, even after all those experiences since they desire a certification from someone that their “experience as genuine,” that their trip was not a failure, without wanting to know the actual depth and the meaning of what they went through; “The highest satisfaction of the sightseer is that…

In Walter Alvarez’s article, “Asteroid and Dinosaurs”, his original goal was to research more in depth about plate tectonics. Sadly, his research was sidelined because of his intriguing observations of the KT boundary. When Geologist make original discoveries, they go about researching by highlighting the aspects of the nature of science. For example, they test hypotheses about events that happened long ago, they rely on communication, a lot of evidence, and collaboration. Eventually they end up finding something else that intrigues them and then the cycle repeats. The process was very irregular, and ongoing.…
