Pit Bulls are commonly recognized as wild, vicious and inherently dangerous animals, which is false. “Singling out a particular breed or type of dog has repeatedly been proven to be ineffective because breed alone is not predictive of whether a dog may pose a danger” (The HSUS). How can you look at any given dog or certain breed of dog and know whether it is dangerous, just by the way it looks? The answer to that question is, you can’t.…

The American Staffordshire Terrier (also known as Pit Bull) is believed to be a man-eating beast. But is this breed all it's made out to be? The Pit Bull started in the Unites States; it has been developed since the early 1800's as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This type of dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed this country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead, and general companionship. A number of the early ancestors were also developed for…

Doxies may look cute and cuddly, but they are tirelessly energetic, clever and curious Always up for a walk, run or a game in the park, they can easily get bored when left to their own devices for too long. They love chewing things and getting into stuff. Dachshunds can take time to warm up to other people or getting comfortable in their own environment. Dachshunds are small enough to fit into holes and hunt badgers. That’s the reasoning they were bred for. They love the outdoors and with a decent sized yard to run around, they will use every bit of energy they have like, chasing small animals, constantly barking and possibly digging some holes. They will be happy in an apartment, but require lots of play, interaction and regular walks to…

Should people be allowed to keep pit bull dogs? Pit bull dogs seem to come up in many news topics, and it always seems to be bad news. Nine times out of ten when a dog is in the news it seems to be bad mouthing pit bulls, the news never shows the good side to the breed, which there are a lot of good things about the dogs. As a owner and someone who know many people who own the breed, I strongly disagree. Every breed has the potential to be aggressive and will at some point have at least one instance that another breed will do something bad. I was skeptical about the breed when I was first given the puppy, but now I would never trade her for the world.…

Some people think that Pit Bulls are inherently vicious but that is not true, Pit Bulls are only vicious if someone makes them that way. There are not bad dogs, only bad people. A pit bull is not inherently vicious, if they are aggressive and attack, either the person most likely deserved it or they were trained to do so. Furthermore, Pit bulls are no more vicious than Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and other well known dogs. There was a recent study by the American Temperament Testing Society that tested 122 dog breeds and Pit Bulls had a passing score of 86.8%. Pit Bulls ranked fourth for the highest passing breed in this study. You are very unlikely to be fatally attacked by a Pit Bull. In fact, you are 60 times more likely to die from falling…

Four paws, wagging tail, and cold wet nose, the image that comes to mind probably isn’t a Rottweiler, Doberman, or Pit Bull even though the description covers all dogs. Assuming you are like most people you associate those specific breeds with junkyards, heavy chain leashes, and flash of sharp white gnashing teeth. Have you ever been bitten by one of these breeds or had a negative encounter? Probably not, but just like so many other misconceptions provided by the media, you believe it. Per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “Approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur each year in the United States.” (“Dog Bite Prevention”). There always seems to…

An Anonymous author stated, “Pitbull’s are beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man without the vices.” (Anonymous) As a Pitbull owner, I feel that Pitbull’s are often misunderstood animals. In reality any animal, pitbull or even a Chihuahua can be mean or gentle. Love and caring wins out with animals just like it does with humans. Affection is what creates a good or bad dog. Not their type of breed or genetic makeup.…

What if you had to give up your beloved pet due to his/her breed? I think that people should be able to own pit bull type dogs. One reason is that dogs determined to be a pitbull are not bred to be mean, they are trained. Another reason is you cannot judge a breed as a whole you have to judge the action that the dog took. One last reason is because it will abolish BSL (breed specific legislation).…

Some of the laws that were passed for owning a pitbull are in March of 2009 the state of kansas said that all pitbulls must be microchipped within six months of getting a dog and of passing this ordinance. No more than two pitbulls for residential house holds and no breeders license if you own a pitbull. Which also affects the law in kansas that if you own four or more dogs you must obtain a breeds license. In 2012 a ruling involving a mauling of a child in Marylands highest courts held that pitbulls are "inherently dangerous", making owners and landlords renting to owners of a pitbull liable for any injuries during attacks. That means even if a child pokes and throws rocks at the dog then the dog attacks the owner will still be responsible. Home owners have to a liability insurance for a pitbull and most home owners insurance will pay between $100-$300 thousand dollars for an attack. So that is why many insurance companies forbid pitbulls or will not provide the insurance. Laws have provided little evidence in reducing the attacks.…
