We live in a world where culture dictates the lives we live. The people and environment influences the decisions we make in our lives, whether it is family, friends, associates, local/world news or past experiences with the situations around us. Our society has socialized values like power, greed, wealth, sexual relations, education, religion, violence and other everyday life topics. The story “The Piranha River” , Beyonce is in love with Pat. They are separated by the river. The only way to reach each other is to cross a bridge which has been destroyed by water. Beyonce has sexual relations with a man named Giligan in return for transportation across the river to meet her lover Pat. Pat decided to shun her for her actions. Beyonce first seeks helps from Jesus. Jesus decided to stay out of her problem. She then seeks comfort or help from her friend Bubba who beats up Pat for what he did to Beyonce. Beyonce(5) is just a girl in love with a boy willing to do any to be with him. She did not want to have sexual relations with Giligan(1). She felt that this would be the only way to get to her lover. She sought advice from Jesus(4) prior to making her decision. Jesus had no answer for her or guidance. Beyonce was helpless. Sleeping with Giligan is a betrayal to the companionship she had with Pat. It was not fair of Giligan to bribe Beyonce with sex knowing that she was going to meet her lover. He should have respected Beyonce as a taken woman and turned her down if there was no other way for her to pay him. Giligan expressed greed with his actions while Beyonce expressed vulnerability to her surroundings. Beyonce expressed honesty towards Pat and told him everything that happened with Giligan. Pat (2) did not show fairness towards Beyonce’s actions. The act she commited was purely to be with Pat and she had no choice. Pat did not consider Beyonce’s emotional well being. For
