REMT Task 1
Knowing the Community

A. Interview with Child Care Attendant Stephanie Molina
1. Is Pilsen a good place to raise a family? Why or why not?
Pilsen is a good place to raise a family because it is family oriented and the children would be introduced to a diverse community.

2. What is your biggest concern when it comes to raising children in Pilsen?
The gangs, I wouldn’t want my children engaging in any negative activities.
Follow up question: Is there a lot of gang activity in Pilsen?
I don’t think it is as bad as it used to be. My mother was in a gang and I have heard horror stories about the gang activity in Pilsen years ago. Several blocks were claimed by a different gang. Lord

The alderman just received funds to renovate the park. The children in the neighborhood are going to be very happy to get new playground equipment.

13. Tell me one organization that helps families. Why did you choose this organization?
The Resurrection Project is my favorite organization in Pilsen because it not only informs their residents about things that are going on in the community, it also helps its residents by educating them on home ownership, and it offers affordable housing to families who are struggling financially. The Resurrection Project has helped many families get out of foreclosures and they work close with government officials to protect the rights of the people living in Pilsen.

14. How long do you think you will work here and why?
I think I will work here for as long as I can because although I do not live here, I have grown to love Pilsen like it is my family. I love the school I work in. I love the students and their families. I enjoy taking walks with students, and enjoy seeing the positive changes that are happening. Who knows, maybe one day I will also become a Pilsen

She has been working for the same school for over 20 years. She started off as a teacher assistant in a pre-kindergarten classroom, which my oldest child was attending at the time. Esther came to Chicago with very little education, but a great desire to succeed. Esther says, “I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher. When I came to the United States, I came with the desire to succeed and learn. I did research on many schools and found out about programs that would help me achieve my goal. I was not going to take no for an answer.” Esther is a very friendly and enthusiastic woman. I often see her talking and laughing with parents on school grounds or in social events. Yes, Esther attends many social events in our neighborhood. She is well known by parents and children in the community. She has seen my children grow up and she has been a great support for me. I chose to interview Esther because not only does she work with children, she encourages women to become the best that they can be so that they can provide for their families and become independent. This is what she did for me. She encouraged me to go back to school and get my degree in

Not only did she work to better factory working conditions for women, she became very good friends with John Kennedy. When John became president, Esther became one of the first labor-union officials to support him. Esther had always been treated poorly by past jobs and Esther was done putting up with. She wanted to make a change and that she did. Esther's husband was dying with cancer around the time Kennedy had won so Esther wanted a job she would feel comfortable doing. When Kennedy had asked her what job she would like Esther said she would like to work in the Women's Bureau. “The department of Labor- Women's Bureau was the traditional spot where presidents stashed a female appointee deserving of a policy-making position. It was suppose to fight for better working conditions for women, but it also frequently and defensively acknowledged that no job should take second place to domestic duties” (Collins 70). Esther was frequently reminded of how little importance the Women's Bureau actually was, but that didn't seem to phase her, she brushed it off and got the job…

I asked Ms. Hill what is the most interesting part of her job? This answer was hard for her because she said that a lot of her job is very interesting but one thing she loved the most is meeting the speaker that come to the school. She is able to sit down and meet with them and have lunch. Ms. Hill is also able to get to know the speaker and later keep in contact with them. I thought this was awesome because she is able to get to know many great people. One thing that she loved at a small university was that small universities are very flexible and a very tight knit, family oriented community. If someone is sick the family is able to take over the sick person job until they come back. After asking her about what was the interesting part I decided to ask her about the polar opposite and that was the challenging part of her job. One challenging part is that being at a small university you have to be aware of the budget. In higher education there may be a very tight budget. In addition to a small budget you also get short handed with the work load. She told me that she goes home many nights and still has a lot of work to do and that it can be tiring because her job really never stops. She told me that “Work is you life in a communication and media job”(Jenny Hill). She is also trying to do a lot with very little and she says sometimes she has to be creative with what she does. I tried to understand what she…

In week four of our class I conducted an interview with a couple of teachers from my area (central Florida) which asked me to remain anonymous for technical reasons. I called them subject (A) and subject (B). In that interview they both opened up to me and took me through a journey of the school system in my area. One of the teachers has been teaching in this area for about 38 years and from what information I had gathered from the interview I can definitely say that she has seen it all. Teaching was her passion since her early age, she recalls playing teacher with her grandmother and aunts trying to teach them proper English since they only spoke broken English. Her family migrated to Florida from Greece when she was 6 years old and she did not speak a word of English when she started school. She recalls being so shy and since she didn’t speak any English, all she did was sitting in a corner and color all day. Up to this day she says she owes everything to her fourth grade teacher Mrs. Prim. At first (A) thought that Mrs. Prim was the meanest person in the whole world for taking away her coloring papers and crayons and forcing her in a way to learn English. (A) Admitted to me that she hated Mrs. Prim for doing that to her, but once she started learning the English language she had a change of heart. The rest as they say is history. (B) on the other hand has only been teaching for about 5 years and she loves it. She’s an E.S.L. instructor and her day consists of teaching English to kids that English is a second language. She says that she wants to helps others as someone helped her mother learn the English language many years ago and helped her…

She explained to me how challenging it was to learn to code shift and relate to not only the United States citizens but the students whom came from all over the world to attend this magnificent university. This was a main challenge for her because most of the foreign residents that stay in my building are on her floor which can make it very difficult when these residents need something. Lucky most of them speak English and being patience and taking the tie to understand them goes a long way. She reassured me that this all comes with the job and she loves what she does because this same challenging experience is also her rewarding experience.…

GENERAL GUIDELINES: Everyone is nervous on interviews. If you simply allow yourself to feel nervous, you’ll do much better. In general, be upbeat and positive. Never be negative. Never talk for more than 2 minutes straight. Find out what an employer wants most in his or her ideal candidate, then show how you meet those qualifications. In other words, you must match your abilities, with the needs of the employer. Be honest and most important never lie. Good luck! 1. Tell me about yourself. Beware, about 80% of all interviews begin with this “innocent” question. Many candidates, unprepared for the question, skewer themselves by rambling, recapping their life story, delving into ancient work history or personal matters. Start with the present and tell why you are well qualified for the position. Remember that the key to all successful interviewing is to match your qualifications to what the interviewer is looking for. This is the single most important strategy in job hunting. 2. What are your greatest strengths? This question seems like a softball lob, but be prepared. You don’t want to come across as egotistical or arrogant. Neither is this a time to be humble. You know that your key strategy is to first uncover your interviewer’s greatest wants and needs before you answer questions. You know how to do this from question 1. You should have a list mentally prepared of your greatest strengths. You should also have specific example or two, which illustrates each strength. The 10 most desirable traits:1. A proven track record as an achiever.2. Intelligence and management capabilities.3. Honesty and integrity.4. Good to fit corporate culture.5. Positive attitude.6. Good communication skills.7. Dedication to walk the extra mile to achieve excellence.8. Definiteness of goals.9. Enthusiasm.10. Confident. 3. What are your greatest weaknesses? This is an eliminator question, designed to…
