Pill Bug Lab Report
The pill bug (commonly referred as rollypollys) is a small, segmented land creature that can roll into a tiny ball for protection. Which is classified as a crustacean under the order of Isopoda (Isopoda). The organism is generally characterized by a pair of antennae, seven pairs of legs, and a segmented body (Isopoda - Slaters). Whenever it is disturbed it usually curls into a ball until there no longer a threat. The typical sowbugs or pillbugs live in moist environments outdoors. This is due to the presence of gills, isopods generally live in moist, wet areas and avoid lighted areas. In addition, their diet consist of leaf litter, fish flakes and other vegetation (Burnett). In addition, these organisms do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, infest food, clothing or wood (Sowbugs and Pillbugs).
METHODS AND MATERIALS In preparing the lab, artificial nurseries are needed for the arriving isopods. After receiving the isopods, the amount were divided and placed into the nurseries overnight to adjust to the new environment. The isopods were carefully monitored and fed daily with raw potatoes, apples, or fish flakes. In which, both the chi-squared test and the observation of the pillbugs appears to prefer the moist chamber than the dry chamber. The possible errors associated with this experiment include, the isopods climbing over each other. At times it would block the connecting chambers preventing the flow between the chambers. In addition, the rocks used in this experiment were slightly moist and may have affected the experiment. Some further investigation include increasing the test size, testing whether isopods prefer light or dark and the pH the isopods

    Natural Selection is the environments’ favoring of a particular trait in a population. Organisms use many different methods to adapt to their environments. In this experiment one must use brine shrimp and salt water solutions to represent organisms and their environments. Some organisms like the brine shrimp adapt to changes in their environments. Brine shrimp eggs produce cysts when their environmental conditions aren’t being cooperative. Brine shrimp eggs grow hard and brown when their environment does not have enough oxygen to support them. This also happens when there is too much salt content in their environment. When the eggs become hard and brown, they can be kept for long periods of time in a dry, oxygen- free environment. When the cyst is returned to its normal environment, it continues on with its development and eventually hatches. Brine shrimp are the perfect organisms to do experiments on because they only require a short time for development. The person conducting the experiment must use 5 beakers, each with different amounts of salt in them. The point of the experiment is to see how the brine shrimp eggs respond in each dish of salt concentrate. Once the salt and water have been combined, one must place approximately twenty brine shrimp on a microscope slide. After twenty four hours, some of the brine shrimp eggs should have hatched while some have partially hatched or not hatched yet. This must be done at the twenty four hour mark and the forty eight hour mark. The data should be written down on the chart given in the experiment papers. The hatching viability must be found by adding the number of hatched eggs at twenty four hours and the hatched eggs at forty eight hours and dividing it by the initial amount of eggs placed in the petri dish.…

The results of this experiment showed that eggs placed in a 4 M sucrose solution lost mass over time and had the greatest percent difference in mass compared to the eggs in other solutions, with the 4 M egg having an average of -25.13% difference in mass. The 0.0 M solution egg only had a 12.28 average percent difference in mass, the 0.5 M egg with 10.39%, and the 1 M egg with the least percent difference in mass, 6.40%. The 0.0, 0.5, and 1 eggs all ended up gaining mass over time whereas the 4 M egg was the only one to drastically lose mass. This occurred because of the levels of concentration of solute in the different solutions. It was hypothesized that a Pill bug would prefer and wet and dark environment based on its natural habitat of soil.
