Piggy Good Vs Evil
Is it possible to be good and evil at the same time? Lord of the Flies by William Golding investigates the quick deterioration of good in human society without structure. Within the novel, the character Piggy demonstrates good and evil and how the evil actions of others affects good and how even good can have an evil streak. To begin, Ralph comes back from Jack’s tribe’s feast to find Piggy and some littluns the “only one[s] left” (155) in Ralph’s group. This represents the good side of Piggy, as Piggy is the only child that understands what is going on, and yet is still loyal to Ralph. Piggy symbolizes trust and enthusiasm throughout the novel, and is a significant advisor to Ralph, even after being wronged through most of the story. Lastly,

    William Golding uses symbolism in Lord of the Flies to prove that everything bad began with goodness. Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys from England who are stranded on an island with no adults. For example, the boys were having a feast sharing and getting along. The narrator states, “The boys with the spit gave Ralph and Piggy each succulent chunk. They took the gift, dribbling. So they stood and ate beneath a sky of thunderous brass that rang with the storm coming(149).” The boys then killed simon, mistaking him for the beast. The boys chant, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!(152)” This example shows that the boys go from innocent boys to savages animals, who kill without remorse. When Piggy goes to Castle Rock to get his glasses back from Jack’s tribe he gets killed and the conch gets smashed by a boulder rock. The narrator states, “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exit(181).” This example proves that the symbolism of the conch’s meaning has vanished. It meant togetherness, power and leadership, but when the conch breaks the meaning of the conch is gone. The boys act like animals and forget the true meaning of the conch, and they begin acting like animals. The environment is influencing the once innocent boys to act in an immoral way.     The characters in this novel struggle internally to avoid the conflicting human instincts, savagery, which is brought by the characters being free from adult society.Characters begin to acknowledge this lack of oversight when Golding writes, “In his other life Maurice had received chastisement for filling a youngster’s eye with sand. . . Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing” (60). In this quote, Maurice is remembering how when adult supervision was present, you were punished for your crimes. Except, now there is no instruction which, as a result, cultivates savagery because they are not being monitored for their wrongdoing. Ralph illuminates his signs of transformation when he mockingly claims, “‘He’s not Fatty,’ cried Ralph, ‘his real name’s Piggy!’. . . A storm of laughter arose and even the tiniest child joined in” (21). Without civilization or control, acts of evil can go undisciplined. This happens in Lord of the Flies and gradually becomes worse as this previous quote just displayed it beginning to worsen. The absence of discipline is at its pinnacle when Ralph forgets about his upbringing and as a sign of defense Ralph launches “himself like a cat, stabbed, snarling,with the spear” (195). The change the characters experience are all quite similar, starting with showing signs of savagery then becoming consumed by it. Ralph experienced this the slowest but once he adapted this lifestyle there was no return. Avoiding savagery was not possible in Lord of the Flies as time passed and horrible acts of savagery continued, at some point the character would be overwhelmed.
