As little as ten years ago, the thought of having a personal computer at one's office desk, home, or grade school seemed far‑fetched indeed. Now personal computers are accepted complacently as part of our modern world. Computer brains run cars, stereos, televisions, refrigerators, phone systems, factories, offices, airplanes, and defense systems, to name a few examples. The next progression of the computer as a mobile unit, robot, may like the personal computer, become a common and essential companion at home and in the workplace.…

In chapter six, “Machines, Animals, and Aliens,” Durham Peters discusses the 20th century- the century which revolves around cinema, television, cell phones, and the internet. Observing these new media and their promises, Peters visions our grasps toward the dream of communication extended to the limits of communicability, in the modern concern for the language of animals, Alan Turing’s apocryphal tests of machine intelligence, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).…

As a novice programmer and a participant in Lego robotics I find the controversy surrounding artificial intelligence very intriguing. Programmers, computer scientists, and researchers alike have debated about the possibility of artificial intelligence becoming more intelligent than humans. Because I do have some knowledge of how computers work I can see why this topic is sparking so much interest. The thought of something that we created having the potential to surpass us is riveting. It’s impossible to fathom the idea that humans may lose their spot as the alphas of the world. In this paper I will break down the arguments surrounding this topic by putting them into simpler terms and prove why one side may be superior to the other.…

In the last century we have seen modern technology grow from almost nothing into a leading power in our everyday lives. Technology aids us humans in so many different ways, and in all imaginable categories, that it would be impossible to list them all. One of the main technological advances that are used in almost every machine today, in some form or another, is a computer. Overtime the processing power of a computer has become immense, which started to beg the question can a computer ever think and or poses human like qualities and behaviors. John Searle does not believe that a computer can ever think because they do not have the intention to do so; however he believes that machines rather, could think.…

In the essay Computing Machinery and Intelligence, Turing introduces a test, named imitation game, which can decide whether a machine is intelligent or not. In the test, there is a man who pretends to be a woman, a woman who tries to clarify that, and a machine that tries to be a man. If the interrogator, which object is to decide who the man is and who the woman is, fails to make the right decision, the machine should be considered intelligent. If a machine can talk to people for a long time and the people does not find out that this conversation is happening with a machine, it means that the machine can thinking. But Turing raises the concern that if a machine does “thinking”, but the “thinking” is different as what a man will do, the machine will still be considered not intelligent. The test may be too hard for machine. Turing thinks we should consider digital computers for two reasons. One is that the digital computer has already existed. Further more, the digital computers are basic machine, that is to say any digital machines can do the things that digital computers can do. Turing is sure that human will invent the thinking machine in the future.…

Tanya Barrientos acceptance of society racism hinder her from having relations with Latinos, she puts in print an article entitled “Se Habla Española”. Barrientos was born in Guatemala and moved to El Paso Texas with her parents at the age of 3, who expect for both of their children to read, write, and speak only in English. Her parents felt that if she could speak without the accent of Spanish, American society would see that children with different cultural backgrounds could fit into English humanity smoothly. “In 1963” (83), “People who called themselves Mexican-Americans or Afro-Americans were considered dangerous radicals, while law bidding citizens were expected to drop their cultural baggage at the border and erase any lingering ethnic traits. 1. The author Tanya Maria Barrientos decided to give her article a Spanish title prepared me for the subject by showing me that it will be about Spanish in some way or form. It led me to also believe that in the use of “Se Habla Espanol” Barrientos was trying to hence that it is used in a variety of places with the same three words. Connecting it to the stereotypical Latino that they are all the same did support my impression as the title conveyed that Barrientos saw that the Latinos were people who “wait[ed] tables and clean[ed] hotel rooms.” It meant to Barrientos that speaking Spanish meant to be poor. To be all the same. Just a poor Latino with a job that is typical. Such as the words of “Se Habla Espanol.”…

"Computers are transforming society. Time is collapsing. Distance is no longer an obstacle. Crossing oceans takes only a mouse click". Virtually, computers which pressure most people's life are considered as the most important technological achievement of the XXI century. Using computers, we can make or solve most of difficult things which are hardly completed without their hands. Because of these different varieties of abilities, computers have been creating many noticeable achievements in most of societies' fields especially medicine, education, and usual life. In other words, these three fields also are computers' influences that I want to write in this essay today.…
