Preliminary Physics Topic 4

THE COSMIC ENGINE
What is this topic about?
To keep it as simple as possible, (K.I.S.S.) this topic involves the study of: 1. THE HISTORY OF OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNIVERSE 2. HOW THE UNIVERSE BEGAN (THE "BIG BANG" THEORY) 3. LIFE-CYCLES OF THE STARS 4. ENERGY FROM THE SUN, & ITS EFFECTS ON US

but first, let’s revise...
The Structure of the Universe
The EARTH is a PLANET. The Earth and 7 other planets (plus dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, comets, etc) are in orbit around the Sun. The SUN and all these things in orbit around it, make up our "SOLAR SYSTEM". Everything stays in orbit around the Sun because of gravity. The SUN is a STAR. Energy is being produced inside it, due to NUCLEAR REACTIONS. The Sun is one of over 100 billion stars that make up our GALAXY. Each star in the night sky is another "Sun" within our galaxy, the "MILKY WAY". Our Sun and the other stars of the Milky Way are orbiting around the galaxy’s centre because of gravity. Beyond our galaxy are billions of other galaxies. The distances involved are immense and unimaginable! We have good reason to believe that the entire Universe is EXPANDING, with the space between galaxies increasing.
Other, distant galaxies

This topic begins with a little history, then gives you an introduction to modern Astronomy. Along the way you’ll learn about nuclear reactions and finish up with a look at the Sun, its many radiations and how they affect the Earth.

Our Galaxy, the Milky Way Sun

Mercury Venus Earth Jupiter

Position of our Sun in the galaxy

Mars Neptune

Our understanding of the Universe is very recent. Just 100 years ago we had no idea of the vastness of the Universe or what was going on inside the Sun. We had no knowledge of the life and death of a star. We’re still learning...

Scientist around the world studies the stars and planets to learn more about the past or to learn how that and our planets are alike. But then there are other scientist who got even deeper and learn what created the planets and stars these scientist are called astronomers and we have learned so much from the science and research they do every day. One major theory from the scientist is that the universe was created by the mixture or gases and matter. And the gases and matter collided into each other until a huge explosion occurred that form suns and giant rocks that later formed into stars and planets. According to the big bang theory a great explosion occurred over 13.5 billion years ago because of the mixture of dark matter and gases. The fusion occurred when the universe was a small as a period at the end of a sentence. This spark created the planets, stars, and galaxies we know and learn about now. We also know this because of random glows from all around the universe left from the big bang these glows are known as cosmic background information. The planets were first asteroid like blocks that collided with one another to create planets this happened over many years and formed planets all around the universe. The Doppler effect is a part in showing us more about the universe and waves it produces the Doppler effect is A change in the observed frequency of a wave, as of sound or light, occurring when the source and observer are in motion relative to each other, with the frequency increasing when the source and observer approach each other and decreasing when they move apart. The motion of the source causes a real shift in frequency of the wave, while the motion of the observer produces only an apparent shift in frequency. Also a another thing that’s shows us waves from space is when u turn on a TVs and static would show or when u used a radio and static would come up between the stations the waves that shows are called electromagnetic…

The sun is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The age of the sun is estimated the mass of the star (SunTrek 1). The difference between the sun and the other stars is the distance. The sun is 8 light minutes away while the other stars are light-years away. The suns energy is generated from nuclear reactions. The sun will be able to generate energy for the Earth for another 5 to 6 billion years to come (How the sun Works 1). The sun is not burning. The sun undergoes nuclear fusion and it will last until the hydrogen runs out. A sunspot is a dark, cool area on the surface of the sun in a region called the photosphere. Sunspots cause coronal mass ejections which are big storms of solar flares (Space 1). Sunspots are counted in cycles. On average, a…

The Andromeda Galaxy, once also known as The Great Nebula in Andromeda, is considered to be one of the largest members of what is called the Local Group. The Andromeda Galaxy, a spiral galaxy closet to our solar system, is now known to be the edge and rim of our Milky Way. Even though the Andromeda Galaxy is bigger than the Milky Way Galaxy, both of these galaxies have many similarities. Astronomers in today’s world base their scientific observations off of the Andromeda Galaxy to make assumptions about the Milky Way. Astronomers have concluded that the Andromeda Galaxy, or M31, is about 2.5 million light- years away, with the entire galaxy spanning 260,000 light-years across.…

    The Big Picture Questions

When we first hear about the size and age of the universe, we don’t realize how big and how old the universe actually is. We have been learning about the history of the universe for many years, but we can only find true facts and real artifacts dated from 10,000 B.C. and onwards. The universe is actually around 13.7 billion years old, but yet we have only learned its history from 10,000 B.C. and up. Legends and myths carry on from then to this day, but we don’t know if they are true or if they are just made up. We learn about different civilizations and see how they expand their territory. We view their paths to conquering land and discovering new places, thinking it probably took a couple of weeks to get to one place from another. But in reality, it took months, some even…

This field is called cosmology and it depends heavily on very precise predictions and calculations. Cosmology is often described as historical science and it is just as important to learn as non-science history. When studying the farthest reaches of space, it has taken light billions of years to reach Earth which means, by looking through telescopes, astronomers are looking backwards in time. Using this and elaborate predictions scientists have formulated theories and general laws to explain the universe. These have ranged from…
