Lab #1: Projectile Motion

Purpose: To determine experimentally the initial and final velocities of an air powered projectile.

Hypothesis: If the angle of the rocket is launched at 45 degrees than the distance and velocity will maximize.

Materials:
Rocket launching platform
Rocket launcher
Rocket body
Air pump
Safety goggles
Rubber washer
Nose cone
40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 angle wooden blocks
Measuring wheel

Procedure:
1. The rocket was assembled by the rocket launcher and screwed to the launching platform using two screws/washer/wing-nut set.
2. The launching platform was affixed to the ground by two nails pushed into the grass.
3. The supplied wooden block was used to set the angle of the launched platform.
4. The air hose was secured from the air pump to the rocket launcher.
5. The appropriate thrust washer was pushed onto the rocket launcher until it made a snap sound.
6. The rocket body was pushed down onto the rocket launcher. The top of the thrust waster was seated completely into the hole at the top of the rocket.
7. The nose cone was attached to the rocket body.
8. When instructed by the teacher, the air pump was pumped until the rocket launched.
9. The angle of the launch, the total time that the rocket was in the air and the distance it traveled was recorded.
10. The steps were repeated using all 5 available angled wooden blocks.

    Pop bottle rockets are used for the study of aeronautics all over north america.Water rockets are used in schools to help students understand the principles of aeronautics. The Science provides challenges of bottle rocket design and flight, including altitudes and distances reached. A model rocket has four components of flight to it aerodynamics, weight, thrust, lift and drag. Water rockets have been a source of entertainment and education for many years.     The objective of this experiment was to build a device to launch a marshmallow into a container. Catapults were first invented to hurl projectiles farther than any human could. They were effective as blockade weapons and vital on the battle fields (Alchin, 2012). The type of catapult used in this experiment is called a Mangonel catapult. Typical mangonels are powered by a torsion-type string, which is twisted when the catapult arm is pulled back. When the catapult is fired, the spring pulls the catapult arm back to its original position, launching the projectile (Alchin, 2012) The mangonel consists of an arm with a bowl-shaped bucket attached to the end. In this bucket a load is placed. Upon release, the arm rotates at a high speed and throws the load out of the bucket, towards the target. The launch velocity of the load is equal to the velocity of the arm at the bucket end. The launch angle of the load is controlled by stopping the arm using a crossbar. This crossbar is positioned so as to stop the arm at the desired angle which results in the load being launched out of the bucket at the desired launch angle.
