Physics Assignment: Laws of Motion
BCA- I Physics Assignment 1 Unit I Laws of Motion
1. A man of mass 70kg stands on a weighing machine in a lift which is moving
(a) upwards with a uniform speed of 10m/s.
(a) downwards with a uniform acceleration of 5m/s2 .
(a) upwards with a uniform acceleration of 5m/s2.

What would be the readings in each case?

(d)what would be the reading if lift mechanism failed and it hurtled down freely under gravity?

2. A shell of mass 0.2kg is fired by a gun of mass 100kg. If the muzzle speed of the shell is 80m/s, what is recoil speed of the gun?

3. A mass of 6kg is suspended by a rope of length 2m from the ceiling. A force of 50N in the horizontal direction is applied at the midpoint P of the rope. What is the angle the rope makes with the vertical in equilibrium.( take g=10m/s2, neglect mass of rope) Q3. Q4.

4. What is the acceleration of the block and trolley system,if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the trolley and the surface is 0.04? What is the tension in the string? (neglect mass of the rope, take g=10m/s2.)

5. Explain the following with appropriate reasons:
(i) What is the source of centripetal force when earth revolves around the sun?
(ii) For uniform circular motion, does the direction of centripetal force depend upon the sense of rotation?
(iii) how do we save petrol when tyres of motorcycle are fully inflated?
(iv) what happens to coefficient of friction when weight of the body is doubled?
(v) why is it easier to maintain the motion than to start it?

A 70.0-kg person stands on a scale placed on the floor of an elevator. Find: - the weight of the person (magnitude and direction), - the normal force by the scale on the person (magnitude and direction), - and what the scale reads (in kilograms) in the following cases: (a) The elevator moves up with a constant speed of 2.0 m/s2 . (b) The elevator has a constant upward acceleration of 2.0 m/s2 . (c) The elevator has a constant downward acceleration of 2.0 m/s2 . (d) The cable snaps and the elevator falls freely (ignore friction and the bloody end!). SOLUTION: The weight of the person depends on Mass and g, therefore: W = M g = (70.0 kg) 9.80 m/s2 = 686 N downward in all cases (a)-(d). Using the free-body-diagram for the person is shown to the right, We solve for N (which equals to what the scale reads) using Newton’s second law of motion: F = Ma N − Mg = Ma ⇒ N = M a + M g = M (a + g) (1) Mg N…

    1. Tension, Weight, Friction: You are taking advantage of an early snow to go sledding. After a long afternoon of going up and down hills with your sled, you decide it is time to go home. You are thankful that you can pull your sled without climbing any more hills. As you are walking home, dragging the sled behind you by a rope fastened to the front of the sled, you wonder what the coefficient of friction of the snow on the sled is. You estimate that you are pulling on the rope with a 2 pound force, that the sled weighs 10 pounds, and that the rope makes an angle of 25 degrees to the level ground…
