Physician Philosophy Statement
A physician should symbolize several attributes such as empathy, professionalism, commitment to life-long learning, medical knowledge, cognitive skills, collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills. Although the attributes listed may not encompass all that a physician embody, they are some of the attributes that I have and will emulate as an emergency room physician.

During my undergraduate life cycle I have taken the perquisites courses required of a pre-medical student. I’ve also taken the additional step of enrolling in further classes related to medicine when possible to gain a different perspective of medicine. This includes ethics, terminology, regulations and laws in relation to medicine.

Being able to experience first-hand the compassion and care that the doctors at Miller demonstrate their patients have also confirmed that this school is not short of role models for me to follow. Additionally, I have met several students who have shared their…

Following the ethics course, I became more interested in specifically bioethics, which resulted in my own study of the field through reading articles and listening to TED talks on the subject. Lastly, I participated in the bioethics course at New York Medical College, which required us to both discuss topics and prepare discussions on certain topics. All of these previous experiences have been insightful, but I hope to grow more by concentrating in bioethics. Additionally, I believe that Bioethics will be a crucial tool once I am a practicing physician. While my foundation from the bioethics course will be helpful, I still feel there is more I can learn to prepare to be a practicing physician.…

As students works towards their Ph.D., they are often reminded of the things that are expected from them as they enter the workforce. One expectation that the future physicians in the United States of America are to know, is the Principles of Medical Ethics, a list of ethics adopted by the American Medical Association in June of 1957 and most recently revised in June 2001. In addition to the ethics adopted by the American Medical Association, an upcoming physician should also be aware of the World Medical Association Code of Medical Ethics. Combining both codes of ethics results in an honest and moral physician, whereas breaking the law results in serious consequences.…

For as long as I can remember, I was always interested in watching “doctor shows.” I watched shows like House, M.D., Scrubs, and E.R. Being young, only four or five, I could not really follow what was going on in these shows. The doctors and nurses would use language I had never heard before, but I still continued to watch the shows and make up my own story line. As I grew up, I still continued to love the medical field and watched the same TV series over and over. I took several health science classes in high school, but still could not completely understand what the doctors were saying. I wanted to further my knowledge of medical terminology and the medical field, so I began to do some research on what was available in the community. Last summer, the Medical Explorations program at UT furthered my literacy in medical terminology.…
