Organizations for a Physician Assistant There are many organizations that physician assistants can join to connect with other physician assistants and keep up with current issues taking place in the profession. The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) is a national professional organization for physician assistants that practice in the United States.1 The AAPA represents 108,500 certified physician assistants throughout the country.2 For members, tools and resources are provided to further improve the quality and accessibility of health care. This organization holds annual conferences across the country for physician assistants (this year the annual conference will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada).3 I believe it would be beneficial for me to join this organization when I am practicing as a physician assistant because I will be able to connect with many physician assistants from across the country as well as learn about issues in my field and how to improve the quality of care given. The Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants (PSPA) is an example of one of these organizations.5 For members, the PSPA is to represent physician assistants that practice in the state of Pennsylvania. Also, the PSPA strives to improve the quality of health care within the state. Improved quality of care can be accomplished through continuing education of physician assistants as well as enhancing the understanding of the profession.6 The PSPA holds regional conferences to members based on locations as well as annual conferences held in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.6 PSPA relies on email to transmit information to members on news and upcoming events.
