In the next month, I will be graduating and starting the decision-making process of what I want to do in college. I have thought about what jobs I have always wanted to do and two jobs have come to mind, a physical therapist and mental health counselor. Although they both have rewarding outcomes, physical therapist gets paid a lot more and I think that’s why I would choose to become a physical therapist over a mental health counselor.
Physical therapists, also known as PT’s help those who are injured and in many cases they improve mobility. They can also review any referrals that are sent by doctors and review patients medical history. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Pt’s use exercise, stretching maneuvers, hands-on therapy, and equipment to ease patients’ pain, help them increase their mobility, prevent further pain of injury, and facilitate health and wellness (“Physical Therapist”). DPT degrees usually last 3 years, most programs usually require a bachelor’s degree for admission as well as prerequisites in classes including biology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy, and physics. Some programs will admit freshman into a 6 or 7-year program that allows for a bachelor's degree and also a DPT.
