Following are some things that led me to making my decision to go into healthcare, including a series of accidents and illnesses I, and my family, experienced. Both of my parents work at Western Michigan University in a type of health care profession. My father is a professor and director of WMU’s Music Therapy program, and my mother works in the field of Massage Therapy and used to do Therapeutic Recreation. I have a brother who was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 18. Seeing how he copes with this has really intrigued me into going into health care. I was diagnosed with spastic bladder when I was four so I’ve had to learn how to take care of my body more than ever because getting bladder infections is very common for me. I enjoyed watching the process of x-rays and helping patients with injuries, although taking x-rays were very painful. I sprained my ankle when I was fifteen. This really put my soccer career on hold while I was recovering and training to get the strength back in my ankle. This started my interest in Physical Therapy. I was in a horrible car accident with a city bus when I was eight years old. I had bitten my lip open and had cuts in my head and hands from shattered glass. I also came out of this with a concussion. This made me very cautious of most things and made me realize life is very short. I had surgery on my lip to remove some of the extra scar tissue. These steps to get me back on my feet were easy, thanks to all of the doctors, nurses and other people who work in Health Care that took care of me. I was also able to volunteer at the ASPCA. It was a great opportunity and I’m glad my friend told me about it. Working and playing with
