Physical Therapy Career Analysis
Since I graduated high school (1987) I have bounced around to many fields. I’ve been a kitchen worker, shift manager in fast food, worked in advertising, a physical therapy assistant, a teacher’s aide and even a ski instructor. Every job has been a building block and I have learned something new at each one. The most recent turning point that has propelled me to head back to school was a series of events that were initiated by other people and affected my family and myself. I have always been drawn to helping others and while in the physical therapy field I enjoyed helping patients find services that the need. One day I heard an ad on the radio about Bay Path Saturday college, looked up the website and saw the human service program and decided to go for it. I have decided to return to school at this time because it is what I need to do to. A few years ago I was working part time and seasonally and really enjoyed …show more content…
My work style is independent and autonomous, but I enjoy collaboration that moves an idea forward. My years of working in healthcare taught me to keep work at work in order to keep a healthy balance between work and home. I can be a very strong “company” person. I am honestly not sure what to expect or what I want from this class as it is unlike any class I have ever taken. As someone who has always just jumped right in sink or swim style, processing “why” I’m doing something is new to me. Throughout my life I have always felt comfortable in whatever the gender mix of a group was, even if I was the only female, so taking a course for women is new to me. As we finish this class I have reflect back on enjoying the debate and discussion. It has been a nice way to meet some other women that are in the same stage of life. The class was very enjoyable, which was a nice surprise, as I haven’t had much experience with women only classes and wasn’t sure what to

A key point to keep in mind while communicating in a class forum is using inclusive language. Inclusive language is the practice of not excluding a certain gender in the text. Terms like “man,” and “woman,” can often offend others because it might sound like you are excluding, or alienating one or the other. Also pointing out that the presenter was a “business woman” and you were surprised that she had some good points may make someone think…

I am writing on behalf of Titilayo Okoror for Binghamton University Undergraduate Research Mentoring award. I have known Dr. Okoror for three years now as a professor and mentor. My first introduction to Dr. Okoror was as a student in both Global Health and Immigrant and Refugee Health courses. During my time as her student, Dr. Okoror’s course quickly became my most thought-provoking and enlightening classes of my university experience. From her lesson plans, teaching of materials and leading of class discussion, her classes were informative, compelling and most importantly life changing. Life-changing may seem like an exaggeration, however, Dr. Okoror constructs course using interesting materials and allows such comprehensive conversation amongst her students that you leave each classroom with some type of new knowledge that often festers for my days, even weeks and expands your knowledge and typically changes your previous mindset about the way you view a certain subject. I don’t believe many course hold this same type of effect on students.…

We must be responsible for one self. Woman seek no pity and in times of distress and anxiety, they too can suffer alone. Stanton hammers home that woman should not be denied an education for they are individuals who have their own ideals, goals, and cognition. They have the ability to contribute and while men may take the lead, they too should be allowed to take complete reign over the governing and actions for their lone soul. (Stanton, 1999).…

During my time at Gwynedd Mercy University, I experienced many hardships that today made me a stronger student. When I first attended Gwynedd Mercy University, my parents encouraged me to choose a major where I would have a career in allied health. Unfortunately, deep in my heart I knew it was something I did not want to pursue but I knew it would make my parents happy. As the semesters went on, I tried to keep up with the studies but science was just something I was not good at. This led me to struggle and choose another major. It took me a while to finally choose what I wanted to do and I always wanted to pursue a career that would help people in ways other than allied health sciences. I chose to declare Human Services as my major and I became very content. However, things were still not easy for me. The middle of my college years, I became very ill. I suffered from many illnesses that set me back on attending classes. At this same time, I grew into depression and anxiety because I did not want to use sickness as an excuse, but knowing that I was not in my best physical and mental state really discouraged me. As my illness went on, my family was hit with my mother being the only source of income. This led me to having to work extra hours at the crack of dawn before classes, attending classes, then…

The ideal job that I'd prefer to have is to work as a physical therapy assistant (PTA) 24 hours, 7 days a week. My three main points are good benefits, good pay, and a career that I'd love. My preferred earnings potential is $18.00 an hour. I chose to go into this career because I'll be learning about how to eventually become a physical therapist and what they do every single day. I will need an associate's degree to become a Physical Therapy Asst. , and the length of a PTA program is 2 years of general education, PT, and clinical education.…

Hello Dr. Aaron Oberman and fellow classmates. I’m excited to be taken this course because I’m almost at the finish line of completing my degree. I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. With age I have learned helping others…

I was a junior in high school during basketball season with no plans for college. It was the fourth game of the season with eight seconds to go in the fourth quarter, when I cut down the middle to go up for a shot and ended up on the ground from a player striking the side of my knee. After three trainers and two doctors looked at my knee I got news back that it was an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, meaning surgery and that I was done with sports until my senior year. After surgery, I had a weekend of rest then started physical therapy. I attended physical therapy three times a week for two hours as well as doing at home exercises. I enjoyed seeing all that a therapist does and how they help people get back to where they were before. I was incredibly grateful for all they did for me getting me ready in time for summer volleyball for my senior year. I started to research all about a Physical Therapist and came across Physical Therapy Assistant, which I found more interesting mainly because it was less schooling. I had decided this is what I wanted to do and go to college for. Once senior year started, I did an internship with the facility I had gone to for therapy. I loved the environment and how the workers all communicated and got along. Getting to help people every day get their range of motion back and watching all the progress they make over the weeks was inspiring and that is what I wanted to see every day in my…

My understanding of feminism has increased greatly due to the material and discussions in this course. When this course first started I had a small general idea of what feminism was. I always assumed it had to deal with women’s rights and movement, mostly about the African-American movements. I had no idea that feminism tied into so many different subjects throughout history and even the present day. This course also had a broad overview with many different types of readings. The readings, along with the discussions generated a more in depth view on particular topics. Although I had a general knowledge of some of the topics, other topics were completely new to me and I found them very interesting. For example, the topic about the native settlers that were forced from their native land by the Europeans, specifically about the Beothuck people of Newfoundland.…
