Physical Journey
Essay – Lionheart
Physical journeys

“A journey is more than just a movement from one place to another. It is about learning and growth.”
This statement is shown in our focus text Lionheart, an autobiography by Jesse Martin and in two related texts, Cats in the Cradle, song lyrics by Cat Stevens and the song 100 years, composed by the band, Five for Fighting. These three texts portray not only a physical journey but an emotional adventure. Many techniques are used to create the imagery that portrays the journey. These include autobiographical form, incomplete sentences, colloquial language and the use of photographs and diary entries in Lionheart as well as symbolism and music patterns in Cats in the Cradle and the responsibilities at different ages, shown in 100 Years. The autobiography Lionheart written by Jesse Martin invites the reader along Jesse’s physical journey as well as his journey of emotional and physical development. This use of present tense and an autobiographical nature allows the reader to understand a first hand account of his experiences and to get the reader to think about their own life goals, dreams and achievements. Jesse’s main goal of his adventure was to prove that anyone can fulfil their dreams. This is shown through the use of many quotes in the text including, “I tried to hammer home my theme that young people can do anything and should be encouraged to follow their dreams” and “If we don’t live our dreams, what’s the point in living?” Jesse uses diary entries, photographs, conversational tone, colloquial language, jargon and incomplete sentences “pumped and buzzed with excitement at my new understanding of so many things” which gives the text more of a personal feeling and to attract the youth audience to inspire them. Jesse Martin grew as a person and was able to become a lot stronger as he had to survive many battles along the way, including the presence of no one but himself being around to talk to. Whilst

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” The concept of “not the destination but the journey” is seen in this statement. In Frank Darabont’s film: “Shawshank Redemption” this proves to be true, likewise in Craig Silvey’s novel: “Jasper Jones”. Both of these texts challenge our understandings of what is success and how by adapting to the journey, one can find new qualities within ourselves.…

A physical journey brings inner growth and development from the experiences a person encounters from a physical transition from one place to another. All physical journeys include obstacles and hardships however they also involve emotional and spiritual journeys along the way. Martin Luther King Jr. used various biblical figures, theologians, and philosophers to back up his nonviolent actions that were not supported by his fellow clergymen or by the people that called him an extremist. Not only did he use important historical figures but he also used some of his own personal experiences to show what the colored community had gone through and the things they saw during this time of segregation and violence. He saw the need for change and he stood up and took the lead in a nonviolent way, making the nonsegregated world we live in…

“Sometimes it's the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.” -Drake- This quote shows that a journey can change you and it isn't just about making it. Its how you got there. In The Odyssey, Homer uses Odysseus’s journey to show how ones journey can change them as a person. He had many temptations but his main goal was to get home. The whole experience made him a stronger man mentally and physically. Mentally he was already strong because he made his mind up that he was going to go home to see his wife and his son. He did just that but not as soon as he would have liked. It took him twenty years to achieve this goal. He spend ten years on the battlefield and ten trying to go home.…

Douglass’ courage engaged readers into his life as a slave. His struggle throughout his life did not cease his determination to be free. Being born into slavery Douglass was unaware of his age, he remembers feeling unhappy that the white children knew their own age, he states; “that this was a way for the masters to keep the slaves ignorant” (1). From an early age, we can see that Douglass was very intuitive and this innate way thinking eventually led him to freedom. Douglass also never knew who his father was and this could have been a way to hinder his hopes of freedom, but even at an early age he was determined to live the American dream. His road to life and self-discovery wasn’t easy but we are able to feel his emotions through his writing.…

William F Buckley quoted “If all difficulties were known at the outset of a long journey most of us would never start at all”. This quote relates to journeys, specifically to inner journeys with the intention that many journeys are difficult and if individuals knew how difficult the journey was going to be, then most of us would not even commence the journey. A journey is simply a movement from one place to another. Physical journeys are gateways to inner journeys, which is a journey of the mind and spirit. Inner journeys take place when an individual experiences events or is involved in relationships that act as a catalyst to gain greater understanding about themselves and the world. Inner journeys can be deliberately initiated, but is usually the result of new circumstances where the individual changes themselves or their perspective of themselves, others or the world.…
