My client is a nineteen year old female who is of average height and weight. She will also pay any bills in the post office, post any letters or cards needed and also get gas and/or electric. My client also has a part time job on a saturday night where she collects and cleans glasses from the pub. My client works 10pm until closing time which is usually around 12-1am. My client enjoys walking her dog to the local park every evening for about an hour/an hour and a half in order to have exercise and try to unwind after college. When my client returns home, her mother who is a home carer for people who suffer from mental health disorders and have learning difficulties and/or other disabilities, is usually at work therefore my client is responsible for making her own tea which usually consists of something easy from the freezer such as pizza, chips, chicken nuggets or fish fingers with peas or baked beans. Nutrition has played a big part in my life even before taking Biology 115.. I enjoy reading Women’s Health magazines and watching television shows like The Doctor's and Doctor Oz because they are filled with nutrition tips, and scientific studies about fitness and health. I am a strong believer that your diet is the biggest component of your health. Biology 115 has been an extremely useful and knowledgeable course because I can apply much of the information learned to my own life. The Diet Analysis project was wonderful because it gave me a firsthand look at my own diet habits.…

In order to improve my current diet, I need to reduce my caloric intake to the 1500-calorie diet recommended on USDA’s SuperTracker. The most efficient way to do this is to eat healthier meals at home rather than unhealthy, easy to procure fast food. In addition, I exceed my sodium intake with 2,016 mg on average, 516 mg over the recommended amount. Due to harmful effects of high sodium intakes on blood pressure, a prominent risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney diseases, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine established the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for Sodium at 2,300 mg. This indicates that I must lower my sodium intake as a precautionary measure (Higdon, Sodium (Chloride), 2001). Again, as mentioned above, the most proficient way to do this is by eliminating fast food out of my diet along with analyzing nutrition labels for high sodium content.…

Being an insulin dependent diabetic with Celiacs Disease has played the main role in dictating my eating patterns for the last six years. I walk a fine line of balancing blood glucose levels with diet and exercise. Many of the foods I eat are simply because I have to follow a gluten free diet to manage my Celiacs Disease. With all of the emerging publicity of gluten free diets people assume that eating gluten free is a healthy, weight friendly, approach to eating. I find that a naturally occurring gluten free diet lives up to many of those expectations, however when certain foods are replaced with a formulated gluten free version it then becomes a different story. When gluten free adaptations of grains in breads, pastas, cereals, etc. are added into my diet I find myself eating a much higher amount of carbohydrates and calories from starch. Many of the gluten free versions of whole grains are very dense in carbohydrates. The reason behind the heightened calories and carbohydrates is because it usually takes multiple types of gluten free flours mixed together to substitute for one non gluten free all purpose flour. I anticipate my carbohydrate intake will be on the elevated side in the initial three day data, but I am consciously mindful to try to avoid too many gluten free replacements and instead opt for foods that are naturally gluten free. Other influences on my food choices would include my on the go lifestyle and my Diabetes. I have been a type one insulin dependent diabetic for twenty seven years. Over the last three decades the guidelines for a diabetics diet and target blood glucose range have changed drastically. Target blood glucose levels for “good” blood sugar control was 180 when I was first diagnosed. At the age of 12 I remember 150 being the upper limit. Now, at the age of 29, 120 is considered the highest “good” limit. These numbers…

Newborns should be nursed frequently and whenever they show signs of hunger ideally, before they begin to cry. It’s a good idea to let the baby’s interest not the clock determine when a breastfeeding session is over. Demand-style infant feeding schedules permit babies to adjust their intake in response to natural variations in milk quantity and quality. Infant’s breastfed on demand may benefit from higher quality breast milk and fewer digestive problems. Infants (of any age) breastfed on demand may experience less stress and pain and may take more naps.…
