Eudora Welty’s short story “A Worn Path” is about an old African American women’s journey on a cold December early morning. The woman, Phoenix Jackson, is traveling to the city through the woods during Christmas time to get medicine for her grandson. Phoenix Jackson’s character goes through many obstacles in the story to reach her destination without giving up once. Phoenix Jackson fulfills her quest while exhibiting bravery and selflessness throughout the story.
Phoenix Jackson proves to be courageous on her journey to get soothing medicine for her grandson. According to Marilynn Keys, Phoenix Jackson goes through a difficult path while showing “an heroic act of sacrifice”. Another critic points out that “the reader sees the truer courage

Phoenix Jackson is the main character, she is characterized as a strong poor elderly woman because of her appearance, personality and determination.     “She was very old and small and walked slowly in the dark pine shadows” (216). The story starts out by saying that Phoenix Jackson was a small and old Negro woman. For making the journey she thinks that she is just getting medicine for her grandson, what the reader sees a old women doing a very heroic thing by getting her grandsons medicine. This example fits perfectly with the definition of a hero of someone doing something to help another person. In many cases, aspects of an author’s stories usually come from their own experiences or are directly reflected by what is going on in the world at that time. It is evident in her short story “A Worn Path” that it is set during times of economic hardship.
