The Role Model When reflecting on personal influences in my life, no one has had a greater impact than my father. He was and continues to be a positive role model as a father, a husband, a grandfather, a devout Christian, a carpenter and an artist. Only by keeping his nose to the grindstone, was my father able to financially support a wife and three children. After retiring as a machinist, my father decided to hang his own shingle and start a ceramic tile business. My father's business was very successful and his vision and bravery to take risks has been carved on my mind. Even though my father worked his hands to the bone, he still made time for his family. He took us on vacations, made time to shoot eighteen holes, and transformed me into an excellent fisherman. The time we spent together on rivers and in streams made me see nature as divine.

Over the years he became quite a master carpenter. He taught himself to make beautiful furniture and crafts. Proving that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I have also acquired an appreciation for carpentry and, well, power tools. One difference between my father and I is the appreciation for art. Not to continuously toot his horn, but my dad can also paint (and I do not mean walls). No, he doesn't walk on water, yet, but he is quite an artist. As a matter of fact, we have a Lou Duda original embellishing a wall at our home. My wife wishes that I would share their love of art and romance. She also tells me that if my dad was younger, she would have dated him instead of

There are few relationships in my life that could compare to the complexity of the relationship that I share with my father. I grew up hearing stories of his childhood when he grew up in a military family with eleven brothers and sisters, moving from state to state in the deep humid south. I grew up idolizing him because of the crazy wacky adventures that he and his older brother (his best friend) would always be involved in. I always pictured myself in his brother’s shoes living the memories along with my father. He lived in a time where kids could run out of the house in the morning and not have to return until the moon rises, a time of peace and simplicity. In retrospect I think my dad and his brother must have the worst neighbors as they terrorized the banks of the bayous getting wrapped up into all sorts of mischief. In his stories he was presented with several choices, some good, some bad, he didn’t always make the best decisions but he always learned from them and engraved in me the importance of learning from my mistakes, a character trait that was deeply seeded into me since the day I could comprehend English. The reason that my fathers’ life lessons have stuck with me so well is because he doesn’t preach to me about good and bad, he lets me live my life and is always there to help me when I screw up allowing me to live and learn. The lessons that are most important in life are the ones you learn from your mistakes, something that my dad taught me and I’d never forget.…

My father was one of those creative and story telling types. His creative sorties were the truth in our house. I used to love listening to the invogorating sroties he would tell me every night before bed. He would tell me that everything he said he did was true and not to let anyone tell me otherwise. As I grew older, I slowly drifted apart from him, not caring about the nonsense he called his life. I soon learned that the most important thing that i had was my family, weather we included him in it or not he would always be my dad.…

Devoting quality time for family is appreciated when we often live separate lives. In “Wordsmith”, the speaker feels appreciative of her father for devoting his time to fill the cracks of her fifty-eight year old house. The speaker’s father has a hard time expressing his love emotionally towards her, thus he expresses it physically through his work. The speaker’s describes her father’s work like “words he didn’t know how to say, the lost syllables and consonants springing up…Until there is smoothness, [the] fifty eight year old house is a perfect sentence.” Similarly, Marco from “Nature Lessons” embraces the country life. Marco’s daughter, Mary comes to visit him from the city, Los Angela. Mary doesn’t feel connected with her father’s values. Marco was hoping to encounter one of God’s creatures to savor with Mary. Marco wanted to show Mary, that Marco “valued most about living in the woods”. Marco took Mary on hikes to trout stream, ate rare meat and for some ice cream. Mary doesn’t feel as connected to the country life like Marco does.…

I have had multiple influential people in my life, but I'm not going to say my parents or a great teacher, but rather someone closer to my age. Andrew Calton, a good friend and great influence. Andrew helped me “get back on my feet” when I was scared to kayak. I would stay on the lake and not go on rivers because I had no confidence in myself. Late at night he and Jack White, another good friend, came to my cabin at camp and told me there was a spot on a trip and he wanted me to go. I went on the trip and the fact that they wanted me to go boosted my confidence. We went on harder rivers I had never been on and I did not swim, or bail out of by boat once.…

Throughout my life I would say my grandfather had the biggest impact on my life. My grandfather taught me valuable things, whether it was insignificant or significant he taught the things to me. I know some things that he taught didn't make sense to me until now I finally understand why he did what he did to help me later in life. I really am grateful that I had the chance to spend as much time as I did with my grandfather, as it really improved me as a person.…

My Dad, the lover, the tough guy, always loves to hang out with my brother and I. So on the trip to Hawaii, he didn’t only teach me how to boogie board and paddle board, he also taught me to appreciate the good things because they aren’t always going to be there. Like the poem of Robert Frost “Nothing Gold can stay.” That’s the kind of thing that brought me and my dad closer; he turned a paddle board/boogie board lesson into a life lesson.…

My Dad is an extremely hard working person. He is always up and ready for the day before anyone else in my family and He is also the last person up always working on His projects. Just as much of a harder worker He is my Dad is also twice, even three times nicer than. My Dad is the most loving person I know, He has been extremely supportive in all my endeavors in life. He always reminds me of how much He loves me and care for me, He also sacrificed so much of His life to give me a better opportunity. He works selflessly to provide for my brothers and sisters all our necessities and goes the extra mile to ensure that we have everything we need to be successful. He always is there for me when I need Him. He would literally drop whatever He is doing just to hear me rant or if I need a shoulder to cry on. He never belittles me or my problems and insecurities. He constantly reaffirms me of my potential when I feel just like garbage. He is always telling me I am destined for greatness, I am priceless and worth more than the world to Him. Even when I hear Him tell me these things over and over I believe Him because He is extremely genuine. It is actually because of Him that I want to help people with my life. He always told me to never be greedy or money hungry, but that I should use my wealth to help the poor. He never looks down on people in a worse position than Him, He always calls other people our brothers and sisters.…

Life has been rough, but I’m a very determined person. It all started when I turned fourteen years old. Being this young really made me wretched at the fact that I had to work for my necessities and wants. Watching other teenagers get their desires made me realize how challenging life was for oneself. I didn’t appreciate my dad’s actions and how they contrived my life. At the time, I was just an ordinary teenager wanting to be equivalent to others and having materialistic things.…

My father is a man like no other. He may not be a hero with supernatural powers, but he can be as mighty as Superman. Before, he works as a security guard at night and a caregiver at daytime in California and in order to send me to De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, he find a new job that could meet the demands of my course even if that would mean enduring the pain and hardships in processing salmons and king crabs in the cold region of Alaska. And during off-season, where salmon and king crabs are not available for processing, he can be janitor as well. There are also times when he even neglected to take his maintenance for his diabetes, because instead of buying his medicines, he would send us his allotment for our needs. And the last time he went back home, he did the household chores that our maid should actually do – he washed the dishes, cooked the food and fixed our drainage that malfunctioned. Oh! And before I forgot, he also love animals. Every time we chat through Yahoo, he never fails to ask, “How’s Ferdie and Julia?” – our dogs, when will Annie, a guinea pig, deliver her babies and how was Louie. I can still remember the times when he was still here in the Philippines, he is a marine soldier, who is based in Palawan. Every time he went home, he will always have either Parrots or squirrels, and took good care of them. Then whenever we go to mall, he would walk like a retarded one, then many people will look and some laugh at him. But then, it doesn’t matter to him. Because he do that to make us – his daughters laugh. And sometimes, even he’s overseas, he would even waste a Php15 load just to text me a joke. And the best thing I like about him is, he let us experience what life really has to offer. When my mother is asleep at night, we would sneak into the house and go to bayan, 7-Eleven and Dongalo’s Tapsihan to eat pugo, balot, barbecue, hotdog sandwich and tapsilog. My father is the best eating companion!…
