A variety of texts and articles over the past few years have argued for the use of an alternative approach to teaching organizational behavior, one that emphasizes experiential learning. This approach "emphasizes an existential, emergent view for learning organizational behavior" (McMullen, 1979), where the role of the instructor is that of learning facilitator, responsible for designing experiences for students to base learning upon, rather than as teacher, responsible for lecturing on theory and concepts. While gaining wide acceptance, this approach has nevertheless created problems in the assessment of students' performance. Significant learnings in this model of teaching occur not only from the development of concepts, but also from the experiences themselves. McMullen (as well as others) has proposed the use of a personal application assignment to help solve the problem of performance assessment. This assignment is based upon the experiential learning model formulated by Kolb (1971). This model is discussed in more detail in the text chapter on learning styles.…

Ectothermic animals are animals whose body temperature is affected by their surroundings. This means that if the environment is cold the animal will be cold. If the environment is warm the animal will be warm. This is because the animal doesn’t have the capability of regulating its body systems to keep a constant body temperature. When an ectothermic animal is cold, its heart rate will lower. When the animal is warmer, the heart rate will raise – as long as the temperature isn’t sufficiently high to harm the animal. (Campbell, 2005)…

When my grand-uncle died, hundreds of people came to his funeral. Many were former patients; they spoke of how gracious my grand-uncle was. He changed the lives of many people by caring for those who could not afford healthcare. Before I die, I want to better the lives of as many people possible by developing cheap and accessible treatments. HLI’s Student Week provides the chance to utilize theoretical knowledge from scientific articles, AP sciences, and independent studies in practical application. Since the field I am passionate about pursuing is pathology, HLI’s focus on life sciences at a molecular level would be the most beneficial program for me as I would be learning how medical professionals research in a laboratory. From the skills…

My interest in Chemistry and Biology throughout my high school education has led me to apply for college courses in these areas. These are my strongest subjects and the ones in which I feel most capable. My interest in Biology, in particular, has stemmed from my vocation with domestic dogs. I have trained and helped with the treatment of injured dogs. From an early age and up to 2008, I’ve owned a German-Sheppard myself, which I trained from harming people and good behavioral manners.…

Learning stimulates the mind and opens doors to a more vibrant and fulfilling life. In my opinion, learning is the foundation to leadership, service, and global awareness. I strive to have an open mind and take in as much as I can on a daily basis. This has led to me realizing my passions in life, passions that have led me to participate in many service programs and to acquiring a leading role in an organization in the special needs community. Also, recently I went to a global awareness seminar at a local college and have decided to go on a mission trip this summer to Zambia if at all possible. I have become actively involved in all of these things that are beneficial for me and, more importantly, others because I love to learn. I love to learn about the world, about politics, about my faith, about people, about anything I can wrap my head around.…
