Pharmacare's Initiative: We Care About YOUR World
PharmaCARE launched a new initiative, “We CARE about YOUR world”, which sends a contradictory message to its stakeholders. The message PharmaCARE sends to its customers and general public is that the company cares about the people, the environment and having an ethical business. The company sends the message to its investors and shareholders that’s the company plans to achecive high profits, even the company has to exploit people and native land. PharmaCARE offers free and discounted drugs to low-income consumers in America, but the workers in Colberia make only a dollar a day.     Perhaps the most difficult situation in business arises when the indigent desire the product being sold.     An example of an issue with pharmaceutical drug corporations is the ethics associated with researching the drugs. For example, Pfizer caused an international scandal when they illegally tested a drug to cure meningitis in Nigeria. 11 children died due to not enough research into the effects of the drug on children. This is an ethical issue, as if Pfizer had done effective research, and received correct authorisation, those children could have been saved. Another issue with research is that drug companies only research profitable drugs. In order to stay afloat, drug companies need to produce a billion dollar drug every few years. Pfizer’s main drug is Viagra for example, which has little impact on global health, and so an issue is that drug companies spend more money researching drugs which don’t matter globally, than on diseases which affect the poorer countries.…

    When looking at PharmaCARE’s relationship with the Colberians, you see that the company’s treatment of the indigenous population is unethical. In terms of intellectual property, the scenario in Assignment 2 highlights the exploitation of the Colberians. While the indigenous population freely shares their information about their cures, the company exploits them by not compensating them for their shared knowledge. According to labor laws, companies should work ethically and treat all of their employees fair -- not equal, but fair. Some employees, based on their position and level of responsibility, should be paid more and should receive better perks than others. However, the company is earning millions of dollars from the knowledge being shared by the healers, and its executives live in luxury with swimming pools, tennis courts, and a golf course, while the Colberians continue to live in huts without electricity or running water. If the company compensated the healers for their intellectual property, the Colberians could improve their living conditions. PharmaCARE is taking advantage of this group of stakeholders because the healers are uneducated, ignorant to intellectual property laws, and do not know the true value of the information they are sharing with PharmaCARE.
