pH of Household Bases and Acids
Objective: To determine if common household substance are acids, bases or neutral. Standards:
Materials:
Litmus paper
Lemon juice
Bleach (ammonia)
Diet Pepsi
Mouthwash
Hand Soap
Isopropyl Alcohol 70%
Baking Soda Solution
Coffee
Apple cider
Red Wine Vinegar
Tap water
Filtered water

Safety and Disposal:
Material

Ammonia (bleach)
White cloudy solution. Strong ammonia odor. Mildly toxic by ingestion and inhalation. Irritating to body tissues. Lachrymator. Avoid all body tissue contact. Isopropyl Alcohol
Clear, colorless solution. Rubbing alcohol-like odor.
Irritant to body tissues. Slightly toxic by ingestion and inhalation. The single lethal dose for a human adult is about 400 mL, although as little as 150 mL can be fatal. Although isopropyl alcohol is slightly toxic by definition, teachers should be alert to students attempting to drink this "alcohol" on a dare.

Procedure
1. Obtain all materials
2. Take pH strip and cut it into pieces big enough to test the pH’s of each material 3. Take a piece of the litmus paper, wet it with the water and let the color come thorugh all the way. Compare the color to the given pH level indicator and record it in the data table. 4. Repeat step 3 for the Lemon juice, Bleach (ammonia, Diet Pepsi, Mouthwash, Hand Soap, Isopropyl Alcohol 70%, Coffee , Apple cider, Red Wine Vinega,r Tap water, Filtered water. Data Table:
