Peter's Runaway: A Short Story
Peter is a 18 year old runaway, he ran away from his family and his life in Germany. Peter does not like what the Nazis are doing in Germany, so he ran away to the United States to join the fight against the Nazis. Peter has an older brother named Hans, who is a soldier in the Nazi regime, and believes that everything the Nazis are doing is for the greater good of Germany. It's Peter's first day at the training camp and it's already off to a bad start. “You Kraut, go back to Germany where you came from,” said a man in Peter's unit named John. Peter did not acknowledge John and, continued to make his bed.
“Hey, I’m talking to you, you stupid Kraut look at me,” said John in an attempt to get on Peter's nerves. John had succeeded. Peter

Everyone jumped up and stood at the edge of their beds.
“So these are our new recruits,” said the Drill Sergeant. He looked right at Peter.
“I’m Sargent McHenry, but you will call me ‘Sir’,” he said.
“Sir, yes Sir,” said everyone in the unit.
“For the next 16 weeks I will put you through hell and back, this will be the hardest time of your lives,” Sergeant McHenry said. Peter looked around, all of the men in his unit were bigger than him and they all looked stronger too. Everyone always told Peter he couldn’t do anything, told him he was nothing. Now was his time to prove them wrong, prove that he could be something.
“Are you ready” said Sergeant McHenry.
“Sir, yes Sir” said the unit in unison.
“Alright, get your sorry excuse for human beings out of here, get to the training course” said Sergeant McHenry. Everybody stood up and they hiked up to the course. It looked hard. The course was a mile long through muddy water, barbed-wire trenches, and a fifteen foot wall to top it all off.
“For this course, you will be running in full combat attire. We are looking for the best of the best, so run like your lives depend on

“I’ll be fine.” said Peter.
“John is just angry because his brother was killed by a German in this war.” Steven said. “That is the only reason he is here.”
“Gives him no right. I never did anything to offend him. I’m here to fight the same war he is.” Peter said. As the men got ready for another long day of training, Sergeant McHenry entered the room.
“Bad news boys. We will not be continuing our training today. Our presence is needed in the war. It’s time to serve your country, make me proud.” Sergeant McHenry said. “Now if you want to leave, but know the soldiers that are out there need you.” he said as he addressed the unit.Peter looked around everyone was quiet, Steven got up.
“I’ll go.” he said, he looked nerves trembling as he walked to Sergeant McHenry.Peter knew he might die, but that did not matter his allies needed him.
“I’ll go.” said Peter, he looked at Steven and gave him a look of assurance. All of a sudden everyone in the unit got up.
“We will go.” They all said, Peter was amazed everyone in the unit had decided to go. Peter looked to his right and saw John walking over to him.
“What do you want.” Peter

A lot of young adults join the military for selfish reason such as, the need to pay for college, the desire to carry a weapon, or even to shoot another person. Coach Teifer joined the military simply because he wanted to serve the best country in the world. Waiting for the girls getting out of their seven o’clock practice, to pass by the small classroom we were in, I then questioned Coach Teifer as to why the Navy SEALS is such an elite group. “Because it’s the only group that has to train. The name SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land. So you have to learn to operate in water. Jumping out of planes, and landing. So it combines every kind of terrain there is.” This Navy Seal program he was in, started with 108 people and graduated only 12 people.…
