When Peter James Larson got off the plane at Hong Kong International Airport he was carrying his skateboard, Bose QuietComfort acoustic noise canceling headphones, and the expectations of what life in Hong Kong would be like. A fresh start. He carried two 50 pound duffle bags to the taxi, his life was now in the dirty trunk of a Toyota Comfort taxicab, he took those oversized bags out of the trunk. However, his life would stay there. Then as the days went on he a carried his North Face backpack, college ruled notebooks,which he writes in way more then he'd like to, laptop ,where he types his essays and surfs the web, This all felt heavier than then the oversized duffle bags. He carried his phone, his link to the world, contacts of friends. …show more content…
He carries his wallet, his ID cards, to get into school even though it pains him every time, his money, his dads money, which made the incentive to take him to this terrible place, he carries his freedom, something weird called an octopus card, it pays for food, busses and other random stuff but strangely enough the tiger mart adjacent to his house does not except octopus, this is a bummer. He sometimes carries his drone, a gift from santa clause, it is his temporary escape from the dread he faces, he carries its 4K ultra high definition camera, because it looks better, he carries his imagination, because sometimes its the only thing going for him, he carries an extra 4480 mAh battery,because he tries to stay up as long as he can. he carries the remote control, because his drone seems to be the only thing he is in control of, he carries a new perspective. he carries the future.     Tim O’Brien’s novel, The Things They Carried, provides an incredible realization of what life was like for an American soldier who fought in Vietnam from perspectives before, during, and after the war. The story’s power draws you in. It makes the events in the story seem real and provides the reader with a sense of what it feels like to be one of the soldiers. O’Brien’s talent as a writer made a fictional story more than believable to the reader. When reading this book, the reader struggles with depicting what is factual and what is fictional. O’Brien provides this effect by blurring the line between reality and fantasy. The book recollects many stories from O’Brien’s own experiences as a soldier and includes fictional aspects to enhance the story and to help O’Brien get his point across. O’Brien teaches us in all of these stories that there is no difference between what is factual and what is fictional in war.     The soldiers who served during the Vietnam War carried more than their fair share of tangible and intangible items. The soldiers bore the weight of their packs, they lugged around heavy equipment, and they struggled to cope with the violence and death that surrounded them.
