The article, The Blood-Red Night by Lauren Tarshis illustrates how the Peshtigo fire in 1871 was a very deadly natural disaster that changed the lives of many people. The Kramer family’s lives were going pretty great in Wisconsin the forest was very big. Next, the article talks about the fires that began to spread out of control and burn things up, like the creek. People began to become panicked and started to try and prepare for the fire. The fire hit them hard and became a firestorm, destroying everything in its path. The Kramer boys were safe in the field, while the parents were able to avoid getting demolished by going into a well. In the end, the entire family was safe and rebuilt through the hardship. One of the horrible things that happened to the people that lived is that they lost their lives. The SCOPE article states, “Nobody knows how many people died, though many agree it was likely between 1,000 and 2,500.” This proves how people lost their lives to this drastic natural disaster. One of the other effects of this fire is that people lost their homes and possessions to the fire. To explain, the text states, “Their town was gone, as were most of their friends. The Kramers decided to stay and help rebuild.” One final effect of the Peshtigo fire is that there was a major loss of trees because of the fire. The article says, “more than a billion trees were gone.” This shows how so much wood was lost in this fire.
