Mating/Breeding: They mate on the ice (as opposed to other seals which mainly mate in the water) from late September to early November. During the breeding season a male mates with a female and generally stays with her (until the time her pup is unaccustomed), but takes no part in raising the pup. Females give birth to a single pup which is weaned 3-4 weeks after birth. During this time the female spends the entire time on the ice with the pup.…

According to the NOAA website, the Hawaiian Monk Seal is one of the most endangered marine animals in the world. They are found only in Hawaii and have a population that has been on a steady decline since the 1950’s (about 4% per year.) Work has been done recently to being their numbers up. Looking at the chart shown in the results section, it is clear the most frequent behaviors are bark, yell, and yelp. The correlation between these three behaviors is that all of them are vocal behaviors. Beginning with the behavior of barking, barking is a very typical form of communication for seals and revolves around establishing and defending territory and mates (SOURCE). Harbor seals, usually males, will bark at other males in order to create territorial boundaries among themselves. These territorial boundaries are not created in order increase access to food because the diet of the harbor seal consists primarily of fish, which are located only in the water. This means that seals secure territories in order to secure mates. There is a competition between males to acquire mates and reproduce and it is for this reason that it's so important for males to be territorial.…

Someone once said, “who said you can’t let people scare you. You can’t go your whole life trying to please everyone else. You can’t go through life worried about what everyone else is going to think. Whether it’s your hair, clothes, what you have to say, how you feel, what you believe and what you have. You can’t let the judgment of others stop you from being you. Because if you do, you're no longer you. You're someone everyone else wants you to be.” Nobody thought that Seabiscuit was good enough to race but in reality they just did not understand him. Once Red Pollard, Tom Smith, and Charles Howard bought Seabiscuit and started using frontier training methods he learned a lot more and started winning. Seal clubbing is an event that takes place in right off of the Atlantic Ocean in Canada. “The hunt usually opens in March in the “Gulf” areas around the Magdalen Islands and Prince Edward Island. The main hunt on the so-called “front” usually begins in April off the east coast of Newfoundland. Its pretty much over by May.” During this hunt the sealers are aloud to kill three different types of seals, the harp seal, the hooded seal, and the grey seal. The only restriction is with the harp seal. When they are first born harp seals are born with white coats. During this time they are off limits to the killing. Although, this protection does not last long, after around 12 to 14 days of age they lose their white coats and their only protection from being brutally murdered. At this point in time they are fair game to the hunter.…

There are two perspectives on this topic, with it or against it. Harp seals are overcrowding and lowering the population of fish in the Canadian waters, this leads to unemployment in many fish industries. There is an animal chain that has to be balanced, by having too many seals they overpopulate and jump the chain, their meat is a great source of omega 3 and 6, their pelts are water resistant and in many cases do not cause allergies, so the hunting sounds pretty beneficial. It’s the most regulated hunt of its kind & the population is large enough to sustain the hunting. There are 9.5 million harp seals and the hunting of seal pups has reduced the global seal population by two-thirds, but there are many other different ways to fix the problem…

Man's presence in the eco-system requires a "green" approach to the use of animals. The principle of the sustainable use of a natural, renewable resource meets this requirement ecologically, conservationally and morally” (TheSealFishery.com).
