School uniforms should not be compulsory.

Hi I'm Thalia and I"m here to speak on behalf of students who oppose to wearing school uniforms.

I want you all to look at your uniform and think, why are you wearing that? What is the purpose? In this day and age, school uniforms are completely irrelevant to a students life. They should not be essential in our Australian schools. Uniforms are costly, do not help a students education in any way as well as take away a students right for freedom and expression. Clearly, school uniforms should not be compulsory and we need to abolish academic attire.

There aren’t many arguments in favor of forcing school uniforms. The best is that it camouflages which students are poor so that they don’t have to feel bad about what they wear. Honestly, that’s a weak argument. There aren’t many families that are poor to that extent and if they are they can’t afford a school uniform anyway. Our jumpers are $120 yet they are itchy and extremely uncomfortable to wear. The kilts are $200 yet they are ugly and heavy to wear. $320 for two articles of clothing. You could by a jumper and a skirt for every day of the week with that much money. Undoubtedly, our uniforms are way too excessive.

Our uniforms are not scholar super-suits. They do not make us smarter. They do not make us creative. They do not make us athletic. So why do we need to wear them? Surely you do not want to curb your creativity or feel like you’re going to prison everyday. Our uniforms can’t be worn places other than school and they have to be replaced frequently because of our growing bodies. Also, our uniforms are always either not warm enough or too hot. Our uniforms are unnecessary.

When we go to school we want to be seen as who we are. Uniforms make us equal and yes, we all want to be equal, but can’t you see that we are not the same? Can’t you see that we are different? It is understandable that the hallways are not catwalks but dress codes will be used so

When students have to wear the school uniform, they can’t express themselves through their clothes. We students need to wear normal clothes so we can express ourselves. If we have school uniforms for next year, that means we have to wash clothes every single day. I used to wear school uniforms when I was little. We had to wear a white shirt and blue pants or a skirt. We will get tired of the school uniforms that we wear every day.…

Moreover, when students are allowed to wear whatever they want, it causes judgment. If you don’t have the latest in fashion or have something that everybody around you does, you will get teased. If you don’t have money and you get all your clothes from goodwill, while the girl next to you has the newest Louie Vuitton purse, it causes a decrease in your self-confidence. Though this breaks the first amendment “freedom of expression”, your expression in the way you dress should not be putting you at risk for bullying and lack of confidence. Uniforms may not look the best on everybody but no one can judge each other because we all look the same.…

Have you ever attended a school where school uniforms were mandatory? The answer is probably yes, as during the 2013-2014 school year, one-fifth of public schools in the United States had to do so. As for me, from Kindergarten until 5th grade I had to wear a school uniform. But once 6th grade rolled around and I changed schools, uniforms were not enforced. I’ve seen both sides to this story, and believe that school uniforms are a controversial subject which can be easily contrasted. Some may think that school uniforms can help students succeed, while others think that they don’t alter the success of a student at all. No matter if a school enforces uniforms or opposes them, the education of the student is most important.…

However, as stated previously, school is a place to learn not, not to show off your clothing line and your personal swagger. Clothes don’t pick who you are, wearing the uniforms will show that they are all equal and that no one is better than the other one. So, I believe that wearing the uniforms will beneficial to the school, students and parents. Uniform does not give students a sense of their own identity. The way they dress are representations of their personalities. Loryne R., a tenth grade student, when asked if she liked uniform said, “heck no, it makes me look like everyone else.” Students shouldn’t have to look alike. School should encourage standing out not making everyone look the same. Justin G., also a tenth grade student said, “I don't like uniform because it makes me feel like I'm wearing church clothes everyday.” As you can see I’m not the only one who finds uniform not to be a positive attribute to the school.…

School uniforms will make improvements to the school and to students. Parents, students or anyone can make schools a better place and help change student's lives around. Students that want school uniforms should make a power point and present it to the town council. They should present the power point as fast as they can because if they end up presenting it later on, then students will not get the advantages earlier.
