Distribution of N95 Masks
Posted: 28/10/2013 at 8:33pm

Heart-warming acts can be observed from the news and all parts of our community. The onset of the haze has once again proved that the people living in Singapore are able to work together in order to protect our health of one another. Tai Hwa Construction and Marican Brothers have gotten all their workers N95 masks in order to safeguard their health. The Ministries, Grassroots, parents, caregivers and many other groups have come up with measures to safeguard the health and safety of everyone.

Since the onset of the haze, we have observed a sharp demand in for N95 masks that is essential for safeguarding our health by preventing us from inhaling the polluted air. Many of us have trouble finding N95 masks in pharmacies and hospitals. A study done by the Great Air Group (GAG) has revealed that the price of N95 masks have grown by 150%, which lead to great effects as it is an essential product during this period of crucial need. A previous blog entry by Ms Desire Pereira has addressed this lack of N95 masks and questioned who GAG would distribute our supply of N95 masks to.

GAG currently has 40,000 masks on standby and we would be distributing them to the public. Groups who are in greater need for the mask would be the top priority. It is dangerous to expose individuals that have severe lung and heart conditions. Also, pregnant ladies and individuals who have asthma are vulnerable groups. In addition, workers who work for prolonged hours are much in need for these masks. They include construction workers, sweepers, cleaners and domestic helpers. Lee Kuai Seng, a senior doctor from Tan Tock Seng Hospital, stated that these workers have a 150% greater chance of falling ill when exposed to pollution for prolonged periods. Distributing the masks to these groups would:

Protect their heath and reduce chances of relapse and sickness by 50%

    Research on Gas Masks

Gas masks were issued to all British civilians at the start of World War 2. In Britain fear was around because the British government thought that the Nazi German bombers would drop poison gas bombs. At the start of the war some citizens had not been issued with a gas mask. In a government document "If war should come" the explanation for this was that district leaders might have decided to keep gas masks in storage until they decided that an emergency situation had developed. However, the public was told to tell their local Air Raid Warden if they had not been issued with a gas mask and neighbours had. It was the responsibility of air raid wardens to ensure that everybody had been issued with a gas mask.…

What is language? What does it mean to people? Language is sacred to the Navajo people. Throughout Navajo history there are articles and statements that many of the youth don’t know the Navajo language because of the past history. It has not been a major issue in the Navajo Nations eye’s until the recent Presidential candidate, Chris Deschene was denied to run for Navajo Nation President because he could not speak Navajo fluently. Today majority of the Navajo people are not able to speak Navajo, let alone read and/or write it. Have education and economic status become more important than one’s native tongue? PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…

Since 1997, during the annual June to October period, South East Asia would be shrouded in a blanket of haze and smoke, Singapore is no exception. The haze is a recurring annual problem in South East Asia caused by forest fires raging in Indonesia due to the local farmers’ “Slash and Burn” method of clearing land for agricultural purposes. Just last month, the haze in Singapore worsened to unprecedented levels, with the 3-hourly Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hitting a record 401 on June 21, far from 1997’s 226. Air becomes hazardous when the index crosses 300. The social and economic costs arising from the haze are significant.…
