Schools should start between 8:30 and 9:00. For instance, “start school at 7:30 a.m., a time that's early enough to negatively impact their engagement and focus in the classroom, researchers say.”(1). If not enough sleep time is provided before school it could negatively impact students and they could lose focus on their school work and result in bad grades. Another example of why school should start earlier is, “The American Academy of Pediatrics said that secondary schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. to better sync with students' changing sleep cycles.”(1). Sleep cycles are very important. Throughout the night there are 5 sleep cycles, all of these cycles have a different stage of sleep. Starting with cycle one is when you are just falling asleep through cycle 5 for when you are dreaming and in a deep sleep. All humans go through these cycles 4 to 5 times a night. Ruining your sleep patterns can have effects for example, “Just one night of interrupted sleep is all it takes to make you feel more depressed, fatigued, and confused, according to new research.” (Dr. Mercola). Interrupting sleep cycles can cause depression and confusion. Some people think that it's funny to sleep walk during the night but it's actually very

According to Sarah Mckibben, author of the article “Wake up Calls”, which is based off of a study by the National sleep foundation, states that “69% of U.S. high school students get fewer than 8 hours of sleep on school nights.” This fact proves the point that students are struggling to go to bed and manage their time. By letting start times stay as they are, students can easily teach themselves the appropriate time for bed and the appropriate time to do homework. Students could have a better understanding of time management which may be helpful when they start seeking…

Of all the things high school students complain about, being sleep deprived and tired ranks first as most problematic. The issue isn’t that kids simply choose not to get enough sleep; it is that the majority genuinely cannot. Students are constantly being badgered by parents, doctors and school faculty to get at least eight hours of sleep, but with school starting as early as 7:20, that makes getting a decent amount of sleep an almost impossible task. Though there are numerous other reasons as to why students are lacking sleep, the start time of school is ultimately the main contributor and leads to many severely negative results. A policy causing high schools to start at 8:30 instead would greatly improve the number of better rested students.…

Consequently, The vast majority of teenagers who attend early starting schools arrive in a sleep-deprived state. Because students are unable to fall asleep early, and cannot sleep in, there is a chronic sleep deficit in teens who have early start times. “Not getting enough sleep can lead to illnesses such as depression, attention deficit disorder, poorer quality of life, and other mood disorders,” (webmd). Among these health conditions, students’ physical health is at risk with conditions such as: obesity, diabetes, and becoming more injury…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

If you had the choice, would you choose to sleep or go to school? Wouldn’t you want school to start later so you could get your nine hours? Well, it’s not as ideal as it seems. For the past few years, the Littleton Public Schools district, along with other school districts around the country, discussed the idea of the change of school start and end times. For the most part of this school year, the district has started to ask parents and students for their opinions and to come up with different solutions that will appeal to everyone. One of the biggest reasons that the district would need to change the times befalls the lack of sleep that students receive. Pamela McKeever, the leader of a study of adolescent sleep said that, "...research explains…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…
